QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The aroma of roasted pig, a hallmark of the holiday season in the Philippines, has been temporarily extinguished in Quezon City’s famed La Loma lechon district.

Fourteen lechon establishments in the heart of the nation’s “Lechon Capital” have been shut down after confirmed cases of African swine fever (ASF) triggered swift action by local authorities.

On Nov. 12, the Quezon City Government announced the culling of infected swine to contain the highly contagious disease, a move deemed crucial given the central role of “lechon” (roasted pig) during Filipino Christmas celebrations.

The decision followed urgent recommendations from the Bureau of Animal Industry, the City Veterinary Department, and the City Health Department.

While the outbreak has sparked concern among residents, buyers, and business owners, the Quezon City government has stressed that the ASF infection is isolated to La Loma, with no reported cases in other city markets.

Stringent measures, including checkpoints to control pig movement, are in place to prevent further spread.

“The Quezon City government urges the public to cooperate and remain vigilant for the safety and well-being of all consumers,” officials said.

The LGU is expected to lift the ban today after affected pigs died.

Despite the temporary closure, the government has vowed to support affected businesses, providing resources to ensure adherence to strict health and safety protocols, paving the way for their eventual reopening and a return to serving the community.

While ASF poses no direct threat to human health, its devastating impact on the pork industry remains a significant economic concern.

The temporary closure of La Loma’s 14 lechon establishments serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the local economy to animal disease outbreaks and the crucial importance of biosecurity measures.
