Philippines Walks Diplomatic Tightrope in Hormuz Crisis as US Ally

MANILA, Philippines – Despite its strong alliance with the United States, the Philippines is initiating urgent diplomatic talks with Iran to secure passage for its vital oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro to engage Iranian Ambassador Yousef Esmaeil Zadeh underscores the nation’s critical need to safeguard its energy supply amidst escalating US-Iran tensions.

This move comes as the Philippines plays catch-up, with several regional neighbors – including China, Russia, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, and potentially South Korea and Japan – having already secured assurances from Tehran regarding their vessels’ transit.

Iran’s public stance maintains that the Strait is “controlled,” not closed, allowing passage for “non-hostile” ships that coordinate with Iranian authorities.

The urgency of these discussions is underscored by the Philippines’ precarious fuel situation. As of March 27, the nation possessed only 51 days of average fuel supply, with oil companies expressing uncertainty about securing inventories beyond April or May due to global instability.

This vulnerability is further exacerbated by recent threats from US President Donald Trump against Iranian power plants and oil wells, highlighting the delicate balance the Philippines must strike as a US treaty ally not directly involved in the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

The Marcos administration’s proactive engagement with Iran reflects a pragmatic recognition of its energy security needs, demonstrating a willingness to navigate complex geopolitical waters to protect its national interests.

The outcome of these talks will be crucial in ensuring the continuous flow of essential resources for the Philippines.
