Spring Grove, PA — A quiet Pennsylvania community is reeling from tragedy after a deadly shooting on Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2025) claimed the lives of three police officers and injured two others.

The policemen were ambushed while attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a farmhouse in North Codorus Township, a rural area known for its farmland, approximately 115 miles west of this state.

The incident occurred as officers approached a residence to serve a warrant on a suspect believed to be the former boyfriend of a woman living in the farmhouse.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, had reported being stalked the previous day, prompting authorities to obtain an arrest warrant and a restraining order.

As officers arrived, the suspect, reportedly concealed in camouflage within nearby cornfields, opened fire.

In the ensuing exchange, one officer returned fire, fatally wounding the assailant.

“It wasn’t a quick ordeal,” said Dave Miller, a witness who lives nearby.

Miller recounted hearing a barrage of at least 30 gunshots.

Returning home, he observed police activity near a barn and was soon met with the sound of gunfire.

“My heart was pounding,” he said, expressing concern that the shooter could be on the run amid the tall corn.

He described a significant police presence, with officers in riot gear and armed with rifles in the area.

“I never thought I’d see anything like that,” he reflected. “It felt like a war zone.”

Law enforcement had attempted to serve the order the previous night but was unable to locate the suspect.

Sources indicate the shooter appeared to be lying in wait for the officers, dressed in camouflage.

It remains unclear whether the intended target was the former girlfriend or the officers themselves.

The identities of the shooter and the fallen officers have not yet been officially released.

The two wounded officers are currently in critical but stable condition, according to Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris, who addressed the media on Wednesday.

“The grief will be unbearable, but we will bear it,” Paris stated, committing to a thorough investigation while withholding specific details due to the ongoing inquiry.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences after meeting with the families of the deceased officers.

“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for societal improvement in addressing violence.

The incident marks one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in Pennsylvania this century.

Paris announced that the Pennsylvania State Police would collaborate with the York County District Attorney’s Office to form a major case team, with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday expressed his disbelief at the loss of life in a community he knows well, calling the deaths of public servants “an absolute tragedy.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, roads were cordoned off, and the nearby Spring Grove School District temporarily ordered students to shelter in place, a precaution that was lifted hours later.

Tributes have poured in from police departments across the region, with flowers being laid at the Northern York Regional Police Department headquarters.

A procession of police and emergency vehicles, lights flashing, honored the fallen officers on Wednesday evening, as community members lined the streets, holding American flags and saluting in remembrance.

According to preliminary FBI data, 37 law enforcement officers have lost their lives in the line of duty this year.
