Thai Beer Scion’s Sexual Abuse Allegations Spark Public Reckoning

MANILA, Philippines – A shocking revelation from Thailand’s elite Singha beer dynasty has sparked a national conversation about sexual abuse, shattering long-held taboos and prompting an extraordinary outpouring of survivor testimonies.

Siranudh Scott, a scion of the billionaire family behind the globally recognized Singha beer brand, recently posted an emotional video accusing his older brother, Sunit, of repeated sexual abuse during his teenage years.

This deeply personal accusation, emerging from one of Thailand’s most powerful families, has sent ripples across a society where such topics are traditionally shrouded in silence.

Sunit, in his thirties, issued an online denial of the allegations. However, the parent company, Boonrawd Brewery, swiftly announced his dismissal from an executive role, signaling the gravity with which the accusations are being treated, even in the face of denial.

Siranudh, known as Psi, detailed in subsequent interviews that the alleged abuse occurred between the ages of nine and thirteen during his brother’s summer breaks from boarding school.

He revealed that he had initially confided in family members three years prior, accepting financial compensation in exchange for his silence.

However, a property dispute initiated by his mother this year became a “breaking point,” prompting him to speak out publicly and pursue legal action.

“I’ve been in a family, in a system, in an institution that’s kept my voice silent,” Siranudh said, underscoring the systemic pressures he faced.

This unprecedented disclosure has resonated deeply across Thailand. Following Siranudh’s allegations, the #PsiScott hashtag surged on social media, becoming a platform for numerous public figures and ordinary citizens to share their own harrowing experiences of sexual misconduct and abuse.

Patinya Kuantrakul, heir to a prominent golf course family, recounted being raped at age 11, leading to pregnancy and abortion. Influencer and podcaster Taylor Srirat disclosed sexual assault by his boss at 19.

The wave of shared narratives highlights a collective surge for accountability, particularly within influential circles, marking a stark departure from the country’s traditionally conservative approach to these issues.

Experts and activists describe this public outpouring as highly unusual for Thailand, a nation historically marked by a victim-blaming culture and a strong societal emphasis on hierarchy and family reputation, which often silences survivors.

Busayapa Srisompong, a human rights lawyer and founder of Shero, an organization providing legal aid to sexual violence survivors, noted, “Thai society places a strong emphasis on hierarchy, family reputation, and avoiding public shame or conflict. This can make disclosure especially difficult when abuse happens within families or involves respected figures.”

The Bhirombhakdi family, to which Siranudh and Sunit belong, ranks among Thailand’s wealthiest, with an estimated net worth of billions.

Influencer Taylor Srirat observed that while a “culture of victim-blaming” has historically deterred victims, social media now offers crucial spaces for survivors to find solidarity.

Social psychology lecturer Apitchaya Chaiwutikornwanich added that younger generations in Thailand have increasingly embraced “the concept of human rights and the right to own one’s body.”

Compounding the impact of Siranudh’s social status, alleged voice recordings he posted, confronting his brother about the abuse, played a significant role in bolstering the credibility of his claims.

This case marks a pivotal moment, signaling a nascent shift in Thailand, a country that has not experienced a widespread #MeToo movement, towards a more open discourse on sexual harassment and abuse.

An environmental activist, Siranudh has publicly distanced himself from his family’s business empire. He described the ocean as his sanctuary when “no one stood by” him after the alleged assaults, emphasizing feeling abandoned by current Thai laws.

He cited his mother’s current lawsuit against him in a land ownership dispute, filed under Thailand’s controversial “ungrateful child” law, which allows parents to reclaim assets from children deemed unappreciative.

Boonrawd Brewery confirmed Sunit’s termination and pledged cooperation with authorities, though direct contact information for Sunit or a legal representative remains unavailable.

While Sunit has denied the sexual abuse accusations, he acknowledged instances of “roughhouse play” between boys.

Lawyer Busayapa stressed that fostering a safer environment necessitates society’s recognition that there is no “perfect victim” and that “sexual violence should be met with genuine zero tolerance.” Siranudh believes his decision to speak out online has expedited his own healing process.

“I hope this will set a precedent for other people in Thailand to follow suit,” he stated, anticipating a lasting impact on how Thailand confronts abuse and empowers its survivors.
