Philippine Navy Personnel Injured in Chinese Coast Guard Attack

MANILA, Philippines – A Philippine Navy servicemember sustained a head injury during a confrontation with Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) personnel near Ayungin Shoal on Monday. Footage released by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) shows CCG operatives striking Filipino sailors with wooden bò (long sticks).

The AFP reported that CCG personnel aboard a rigid-hull inflatable boat launched an unprovoked attack on a Philippine Navy rubber boat attempting to resupply the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded naval vessel serving as a Philippine outpost in contested waters. The assault resulted in a head injury to a Philippine Navy member and significant damage to their vessel.

China’s Coast Guard, however, presented a counter-narrative, accusing Philippine personnel of initiating the confrontation. Beijing asserted that Filipino sailors “first attacked Chinese law enforcement personnel with paddles and bö sticks” after two Philippine rubber boats “rapidly approached and encircled” a Chinese patrol boat, ignoring “repeated and explicit warnings.” A 49-second video clip circulated by China’s state-backed tabloid Global Times shows personnel from both sides wielding paddles and bö sticks amidst shouts from Chinese officers to “leave immediately.”

This latest clash follows an increased Chinese naval presence in the West Philippine Sea, with the Philippine Navy reporting 26 Chinese vessels spotted between June 9 and 15 and 82 in May. The AFP maintains its personnel acted professionally and in accordance with international law, vehemently condemning the CCG’s “illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive actions.” The AFP further declared these actions demonstrate a “blatant disregard for safety, endanger the lives of our personnel, and escalate tensions in the West Philippine Sea.”

This incident marks a critical escalation in a series of aggressive encounters in the disputed waters. Past confrontations include multiple instances of Chinese vessels water-cannoning Philippine boats. In August 2025, a high-speed chase of a Philippine vessel concluded with two Chinese military vessels colliding. A particularly brutal incident in June 2024 saw Chinese law enforcement, armed with knives, sticks, and an axe, attack Filipino troops attempting to resupply the Sierra Madre, resulting in a Filipino servicemember losing a thumb.

The timing of this incident is also notable, coming on the heels of a “racist” video widely circulated by Chinese state media, portraying the Philippines as a cartoon monkey—an act denied by the Chinese government. The escalating aggression and physical violence against Philippine personnel underscore a deteriorating security situation in the West Philippine Sea, raising profound concerns about regional stability and adherence to international maritime law.
