OCCUPIED WEST BANK, Palestine – The long-simmering violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has boiled over into a fresh wave of brutal attacks, with armed Israeli settlers assaulting Palestinian olive harvesters and a Washington Post photojournalist. This escalating aggression, described by some as “pogroms,” comes amidst a backdrop of relentless settlement expansion and accusations of an entrenched apartheid regime.

The latest incident, occurring in the village of Abu Falah north of Ramallah, saw approximately 80 masked settlers, wielding clubs and guns, charge at Palestinians engaged in the crucial olive harvest. This harvest, a vital economic lifeline for Palestinian communities, has become a regular flashpoint for settler violence. Eyewitnesses reported the sound of live gunfire and observed an armed settler firing a weapon.

Independent journalist Jasper Nathaniel, present during the attack, described the West Bank violence as “at or near an all-time high.” He recounted the chaotic scene where everyone fled as settlers opened fire. It was then that Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine fell, becoming a target.

“We saw that there was a journalist… on the ground [with] people beating her, clubbing her, robbing her, pulling her up, beating her again, and kicking her,” Nathaniel stated. Levine later credited her helmet and flak jacket for saving her life. Nathaniel himself only reached Levine with the cover of young Palestinians who “provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers.” He highlighted that it was these Palestinian youths, not the attacking settlers, whom the Israeli army pursued following the assault.

The Washington Post swiftly condemned the attack on Levine, calling for “a thorough investigation and follow-through from authorities.” The US State Department echoed this condemnation of “criminal violence by any party in the West Bank” and offered consular assistance, demanding “legal accountability for those responsible.”

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office offered a conditional condemnation, claiming the facts “remain unclear” and calling for an investigation to “establish the facts, including who initiated the violence.” This response comes as Israel’s government actively promotes the expansion of illegal settlements on Palestinian land, a policy Amnesty International recently highlighted with the confiscation of 200 dunams in Jenin to connect two planned settlements.

The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) reports that settler violence in the West Bank has reached unprecedented levels. This escalating aggression and Israel’s expansionist policies have drawn increased international scrutiny, prompting allies like the UK and France to implement sanctions on goods from illegal settlements – a significant shift from previous verbal criticisms.

This recent violence underscores the grim reality in the occupied territories, where Palestinians face systematic oppression, land confiscation, and unbridled attacks from settlers, often with the perceived acquiescence or direct support of Israeli authorities. The cries of “Palestine Shackled, bleeding, raped: Abuse in Israeli prisons” and the stark declaration “This is an apartheid regime” resonate deeply amidst these events, raising critical questions about international accountability and the future of the region. The silence surrounding these atrocities and the muted international response only emboldens further aggression, perpetuating a cycle of violence and injustice.
