Philippine Airlines Under Fire: Cardinal David’s Outcry Exposes “Profit Over Comfort” Reality

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Airlines (PAL), often promoted as “the Heart of the Filipino” and a full-service carrier, is facing intense scrutiny following a public complaint from a prominent religious leader. Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David recently took to social media to expose what he described as “cramped seating and limited legroom,” sparking a broader debate about the airline prioritizing profits at the expense of passenger comfort.

Cardinal David recounted his experience on an October 20 flight to Cebu, where the restrictive seating exacerbated pain from his osteoarthritis. His hope for relief on the return journey proved futile, as he found the assigned seat equally confining despite requesting more legroom. Standing nearly six feet tall, the Cardinal underscored how such conditions disproportionately impact tall individuals, senior citizens, passengers with disabilities, and those with pre-existing physical conditions.

His critical reflection culminated in a poignant question directed at the airline’s ethos. Recalling a flight attendant’s cheerful repetition of the “Heart of the Filipino” slogan, Cardinal David stated: “I could not help wondering: Has the ‘Heart of the Filipino’ become a little less compassionate toward the Filipino passenger? How disheartening.”

This public challenge from a respected figure directly questions whether PAL’s operational strategies are sacrificing passenger well-being for increased profitability. The Cardinal’s experience highlights a growing concern among travelers who, despite choosing a flag carrier, report a diminishing level of comfort that some contend is surpassed by even low-cost airlines. His powerful message underscores a call for Philippine Airlines to re-evaluate its commitment to the very “heart” it claims to embody, urging a renewed focus on the comfort and dignity of its passengers.
