MANILA, Philippines — As the Department of Transportation (DOTr) ramps up its efforts to address the taxi overcharging issue at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), more corruption allegations within the Airport Police Department (APD) have surfaced.

A recent joint operation by the Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and the Manila International Airport Authority at NAIA Terminal 3 led to the arrest of another taxi driver operating without a valid license.

Authorities also found the taxi’s poor condition, such as a cracked windshield and worn-out tires.

An airport insider disclosed that alleged corruption within the APD persists.

Some APD officers reportedly continue to misuse their authority for personal gain.

“While we applaud the DOTr’s dedication to eliminating abusive taxi drivers at the airport, corruption within the APD cannot be overlooked,” the official said.

“The DOTr must take decisive action, including revoking the deputization of any officers found to be misusing their power, to ensure that the fight against corruption remains uncompromised,” he added.

The DOTr, LTO, LTFRB, MIAA, and APD have vowed to intensify efforts to safeguard passengers’ welfare at the airport.
