MANILA, Philippines – A gripping account shared online by a business consultant has revealed that thieves are now boarding commercial planes to rob passengers.

Often disguised in business attire, these thieves prey on unsuspecting passengers, particularly overseas Filipino workers returning home with their hard-earned money.

In his narrative on Inquirer.net, Enrique Soriano recounted his chilling experience during a flight from Manama, Bahrain, to Istanbul, Turkey.

What began as a routine journey spiraled into a robbery at 39,000 feet.

On a late-night flight back home, Soriano settled into his seat, weary from a long day.

After a few hours of restful sleep, he was jolted awake by a flight attendant who discreetly alerted him about a suspicious “activity” regarding his carry-on bag.

Upon inspection, he found his passport and credit cards intact. However, upon checking his travel pouch filled with various currencies, he discovered that the bag was empty, with its zipper gaping wide.

Witnesses pointed to a passenger seated behind him who had been tampering with the overhead bin where his bag was stored.

Prioritizing safety, the flight crew advised Soriano to stay calm while they informed the captain.

Upon landing, authorities were poised to investigate, but the suspect, a Chinese national, denied any wrongdoing, citing a lack of evidence.

He claimed to have been asleep during the incident, and with witnesses hurrying to catch their next flights, no formal complaints were lodged against the suspect.

Coordinated Operation

As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that Soriano’s ordeal was not an isolated incident.

Airport personnel and Istanbul police revealed a disturbing trend: theft syndicates operate on long-haul flights, capitalizing on dim cabin lighting and dozing passengers.

Their tactics involve quietly unzipping bags and scattering stolen cash across various overhead compartments to evade detection.

Soriano’s experience echoed that of many others, as authorities disclosed that numerous suspects who hail from Hainan, China, are notorious for such crimes.

Despite the hurdles in recovering stolen funds, Soriano filed a formal complaint, resolute in holding the perpetrator accountable and preventing others from becoming victims.

Precautions for Travelers

In light of the alarming incidents, travelers have been advised to protect their belongings while in flight.

Airport authorities provided the following tips:

  1. Keep Valuables Close:

Utilize a neck pouch or hidden waist wallet for cash and passports, steering clear of overhead compartments altogether.

  • Stay Vigilant While Sleeping:

Secure bags in a way that makes tampering obvious, such as wrapping straps around your legs or using locks.

  • Monitor Your Belongings:

Periodically check your bags throughout the flight, especially during restroom breaks.

  • Be Aware of Security Limitations:

Remember that airplane cabins lack CCTV cameras; your vigilance is your greatest defense.

  • Observe Your Surroundings:

Remain alert to passengers lingering near overhead bins, particularly if they stray from their designated seats.

  • Report Suspicious Behavior:

Should you notice anything amiss, discreetly inform the cabin crew immediately.

Soriano’s experience serves as a stark reminder that in-flight theft can strike anyone.

Organized criminals are getting bolder, operating above the clouds with little fear of repercussions.

By sharing his story, Soriano hopes to raise awareness and enable fellow travelers to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their belongings and themselves.
