BRISBANE, Australia — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is working to manage the fallout after Hamas publicly praised Australia’s recent recognition of Palestinian statehood, a move the terror organization hailed as an act of “political courage.”

Albanese has swiftly distanced himself from the endorsement, branding it “Hamas propaganda” and warning against the group’s attempts to manipulate the narrative.

The controversy erupted after a statement attributed to Hamas co-founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, currently imprisoned in Israel, lauded Australia’s decision as a significant step toward justice for the Palestinian people.

The statement, published in the “Sydney Morning Herald” on Wednesday, expressed gratitude for the recognition.

Albanese immediately countered, questioning the authenticity of the message given Yousef’s imprisonment and emphasizing the international community’s united front in isolating Hamas.

“This should serve as a warning to the media about Hamas’s attempts to manipulate narratives,” he stated.

However, Hamas doubled down, with media director Ismail Al-Thawabta reiterating the group’s approval in a statement to the ABC.

Al-Thawabta framed the recognition as a positive step towards acknowledging Palestinian rights and urged the Australian government to take concrete actions, including diplomatic pressure, to end the Israeli occupation.

Hamas officials have made it clear that while they welcome the recognition, they expect it to translate into tangible support for Palestinian sovereignty and adherence to international law.

The situation has drawn sharp criticism from Israel, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar mocking Albanese’s position on social media, highlighting the complexities of the political tightrope he is walking.

Albanese has repeatedly affirmed his unwavering commitment to not supporting Hamas or its narratives, calling for a united front among Australian political leaders to isolate the organization. He has faced questions regarding the demilitarization of Hamas and its role in any future Palestinian state but has pointed to a consensus within the Arab League that Hamas should not be involved in governance.

The Prime Minister’s efforts to navigate this highly sensitive issue underscore the delicate balance required in international relations and the intense domestic political pressures surrounding the recognition of Palestinian statehood.
