MANILA, Philippines – Amid swirling allegations of kickbacks in flood control projects, Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez finds himself embroiled in a firestorm after publicly releasing the contact information of journalists he accused of orchestrating a negative “media spin.”

The move, widely condemned as a blatant act of intimidation, has ignited calls for an ethics investigation and serves as a potent reminder: “never pick a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel.”

Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno has formally urged the House ethics committee to review Gomez’s conduct, deeming it “unbecoming of an elected official.”

The controversy stems from Gomez’s Facebook post alleging that reporters were being paid to solicit his response to criticism from Matag-ob Mayor Bernie Tacoy, who accused the former actor of ineffective and uncoordinated flood control initiatives.

Instead of addressing Tacoy’s substantive allegations, Gomez opted to publicly expose the journalists, a decision that has backfired spectacularly.

“Elected officials must be prepared to address inquiries about their actions,” stated Puno, a former interior secretary. “You cannot simply insult people when faced with questions that require your explanation as a legislator.” He encouraged affected journalists to file a formal complaint, emphasizing the higher ethical bar expected of public servants.

The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) echoed Puno’s concerns, condemning Gomez for prioritizing the exposure of journalists over addressing the core allegations.

The NUJP stressed that media inquiries are opportunities for public officials to clarify their positions and engage with the public. “Mr. Gomez could have simply declined to comment without resorting to disclosing personal information about journalists,” the NUJP stated.

This incident highlights the inherent power imbalance between elected officials and the press. By doxxing journalists, Gomez weaponized his position to potentially silence critical voices and chill future reporting. The act raises serious questions about his understanding of journalistic freedom and the ethical boundaries of his office.

“Being held to a higher standard extends beyond mere appearances,” Puno reiterated. “Public officials must conduct themselves in a manner that reinforces the public’s trust.”

The case underscores the vital role of a free press in holding power accountable. Doxxing journalists, as Gomez is accused of doing, is a direct assault on this principle, creating a climate of fear and hindering the ability of reporters to perform their essential function.

The House ethics committee now faces immense pressure to act decisively. The outcome of this case will send a powerful message about the consequences of intimidating the press and the importance of upholding ethical standards in public office.

For Richard Gomez, a former McDonald’s service crew member turned movie star turned lawmaker, this scandal threatens to overshadow his political career and serves as a cautionary tale: “when you’re under scrutiny, remember the power of the press – they buy ink by the barrel.” The public and the media will be watching closely as the ethics committee deliberates.
