MANILA, Philippines – In a decisive blow against escalating cybercrime, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), in collaboration with the Philippine Navy, has apprehended two individuals suspected of orchestrating a sophisticated phishing scheme targeting densely populated areas of Metro Manila.

The suspects allegedly deployed fraudulent text messages containing malicious links designed to steal personal information.

The arrests, culminating in days of intensive surveillance in Makati and Mandaluyong, mark a significant victory in the fight against online fraud, according to ACG Director Brigadier General Bernard Yang.

Authorities believe the suspects, operating independently but employing identical deceptive tactics, specifically targeted high-traffic zones like Makati, Bonifacio Global City, and the Mall of Asia to harvest phone numbers for their text blast campaigns.

Seized during the operation were over a dozen international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) catchers – sophisticated devices used for mass text messaging, a tactic frequently exploited in scamming activities.

These IMSI catchers, also known as “stingrays” or “rogue cell towers,” mimic legitimate cell towers to intercept and collect data from nearby mobile phones.

The suspects allegedly roamed these prime locations, using the technology to gather cellphone numbers before unleashing a barrage of deceptive SMS messages.

“This operation sends a clear message: we are actively pursuing and dismantling cybercriminal networks that prey on unsuspecting citizens,” said Yang.

The PNP-ACG stressed the importance of public awareness, issuing a stark warning: “Do not click on suspicious links embedded in text messages.”

This simple precaution can be the difference between security and becoming a victim of phishing scams and identity theft.

The PNP-ACG urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activity as they continue their relentless pursuit of cybercriminals.
