Judge’s Life Ends in Motorcycle Accident

PINAMUNGAJAN, Cebu – The untimely death of Judge Carmela Rosario C. Pasquin in a motorcycle accident Wednesday morning has sent shockwaves through Cebu’s legal community, sparking an outpouring of grief and revealing a life of remarkable humility that stands in stark contrast to the pervasive corruption allegations currently swirling within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Pasquin, 41, was on her way to the Municipal Circuit Trial Court in Pinamungajan, where she presided with a reputation for fairness and diligence when the motorcycle she was riding on collided with a car.

Preliminary investigations showed that a 19-year-old unlicensed driver, Mark James Cabiling, swerved into the lane, causing the motorcycle driven by court processor Eric Gelizon Lanzarate to crash.

Pasquin was pronounced dead on arrival at Pinamungajan District Hospital.

Cabiling is now facing homicide charges.

The judge’s death has illuminated a life of unassuming simplicity, a rarity in a society often marred by stories of corruption among public officials.

She routinely commuted to work via motorcycle, often sharing rides with colleagues from her home in Toledo City.

Her commitment to public service over personal enrichment is underscored by her lack of material possessions, a stark contrast to the lavish displays of wealth often associated with those in positions of power.

Lawyers who appeared before Pasquin remember her as a competent, incorruptible, and exceptionally fair jurist.
