MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) devastation continues to unfold as the official death toll climbed to 188, with 135 still missing, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported Friday.

Cebu, bearing the brunt of the storm’s fury, accounts for 139 fatalities and 79 missing persons, showing the typhoon’s catastrophic impact on the region.

Deaths were also reported in Negros Occidental, with 24 victims; Negros Oriental, 9; and several other provinces across the Visayas and Mindanao.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports that over 2.2 million individuals have been affected by Tino, with nearly 400,000 still seeking refuge in evacuation centers.

The typhoon has also inflicted significant damage to agriculture (P10.6 million) and infrastructure (P6.3 million), leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Calls for Accountability Emerge Amid the Rubble

As communities grapple with the aftermath, voices are rising, demanding accountability for alleged corruption and substandard infrastructure that exacerbated the flooding.

Victims are calling for justice, alleging trillions in kickbacks involving senators, congressmen, DPWH engineers, and contractors in flood control projects that were either ghost projects or built below standard.

This outcry adds a layer of urgency to the recovery efforts, highlighting the need for transparency and integrity in future disaster preparedness and mitigation initiatives.

Aviation Alert Issued as New Super Typhoon Looms

Even as the nation mourns the losses from Tino, a new threat looms on the horizon.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has placed all airport operations on heightened alert in anticipation of Severe Tropical Storm Fung-wong, expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and intensify into a super typhoon.

CAAP Director General Raul del Rosario has instructed airport managers to activate emergency response plans to ensure the safety of passengers, aircraft, and infrastructure.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts that Fung-wong, to be named “Uwan” upon entering PAR, could reach super typhoon status by the weekend.

A potential landfall in northern or Central Luzon is expected on Monday, prompting warnings of heavy rainfall across 25 provinces.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has already declared a national calamity in response to Tino’s devastation and the impending arrival of the new super typhoon, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for coordinated disaster response efforts.

The nation now faces a double challenge: recovering from the devastation of Tino while preparing for the potential onslaught of another powerful storm.
