MANILA, Philippines – Juan Ponce Enrile, a colossus of Philippine politics whose career spanned decades of dramatic transformation and enduring controversy, has died. He was 101.

His daughter, Katrina Ponce Enrile, confirmed his passing on Thursday, marking the end of an era defined by Enrile’s profound and often polarizing influence.

“His final wish was to be home, surrounded by his family,” Katrina said. “We were privileged to grant him that wish and cherish those precious last moments.”

Enrile’s life, stretching across a century, mirrored the Philippines’ own tumultuous journey. From the former president Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship to the rise of democracy and beyond, his career was a constant presence, leaving an indelible – and fiercely debated – mark on the nation’s political landscape.

Enrile ascended to power as justice secretary (1968-1970) and later as defense minister (1972-1986) under Marcos, becoming a central architect of the Martial Law regime. This period remains a source of deep division in Philippine society, and Enrile’s role was subject to intense scrutiny.

In a stunning and consequential act, Enrile defected from the Marcos regime in 1986, a pivotal moment that ignited the EDSA People Power Revolution. His defection is widely credited with accelerating the downfall of Marcos and paving the way for Corazon Aquino’s presidency, altering the course of Philippine history.

Beyond the Marcos years, Enrile demonstrated remarkable political longevity, serving three terms in the Senate and ultimately presiding over the upper chamber from 2008 to 2013. His enduring influence was further cemented in 2022 when President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. appointed him as chief presidential legal counsel, a testament to his continued relevance in Philippine governance.

Enrile’s legacy is a complex tapestry woven with threads of power, controversy, and enduring influence. His death compels a national reckoning with his role in shaping Philippine history, a narrative inextricably linked to some of the nation’s most defining and divisive moments. He leaves behind a nation grappling with his impact, a testament to the enduring power of a single figure who shaped the nation’s destiny.
