BALI, Indonesia – A pall of grief hangs over the popular tourist destination of Canggu, following a suspected mass poisoning incident at a budget hostel that claimed the life of a young backpacker and left at least 20 others seriously ill.

The tragedy occurred at Clandestino Hostel, a budget accommodation frequented by foreign travelers, raising serious questions about safety standards and transparency within the Balinese tourism industry.

Deqing Zhuoga, 25, was found unresponsive in her bunk on Sept. 2, exhibiting severe symptoms of vomiting and chills.

Her discovery has triggered a police investigation into the hostel’s operations and the circumstances surrounding her death.

The victim’s friend and roommate, Leila Li, was among those hospitalized.

Li, who spent five days in intensive care, only learned of Zhuoga’s passing after her own discharge.

Her account paints a harrowing picture of the events leading up to the tragedy.

“She was too sick to move or call for help,” Li recounted, “lying in her bunk vomiting for hours while other guests scrambled for assistance.”

Local police confirmed the investigation, stating that the alarming number of similar symptoms reported by guests prompted a thorough examination of the hostel’s practices.

Authorities discovered vomit in a trash bin, leading them to estimate that Zhuoga had been deceased for between two and 12 hours before being found.

Adding to the tragedy, it has emerged that Zhuoga was alone when she died.

According to reports, the hostel receptionist, Maria Gores, checked on her shortly before her shift ended and, concerned about her condition, arranged for her to be taken to a nearby clinic.

However, due to alleged financial constraints, Zhuoga received only limited treatment – medication purchased from a pharmacy – before being returned to her room.

While the official cause of death has been determined as acute gastroenteritis and hypovolemic shock, the precise source of the suspected poisoning remains under investigation.

Li alleges that Zhuoga’s medical tests indicated pesticide poisoning and claims to have witnessed an adjacent room being quarantined after fumigation for bedbugs the night before the incident.

Other guests corroborated Li’s account.

Leslie Zhao, another tourist, reported experiencing severe symptoms after checking in just hours after the initial hospitalizations began.

Zhao described a terrifying ordeal where she “almost died” after vomiting and fainting for over seven hours, alleging that her calls for assistance went unanswered.

The scope of the outbreak appears to be significant, with reports indicating that over 20 individuals experienced illness, at least 10 of whom were in critical condition.

The incident has fueled suspicions among guests of a potential cover-up regarding the hostel’s conditions and the events surrounding the tragedy.

“They are trying to cover it up, and I just want to warn people so this does not happen to anyone else,” Li said, echoing the sentiments of other affected guests.

Concerns about hygiene and safety at Clandestino Hostel appear to predate the recent tragedy.

Online reviews prior to the incident highlighted concerns about bedbug infestations.

One review explicitly stated, “The front desk was not honest about the bedbug infestation.”

In response to the unfolding situation, Clandestino’s staff have issued a statement claiming full cooperation with authorities and expressing hope for a swift resolution of the case.

A spokesperson emphasized the delicate nature of the ongoing investigation and offered condolences to the families of those affected.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with budget accommodations, even in popular tourist destinations like Bali, which attracts approximately 1.5 million Australian visitors annually.
