MANILA, Philippines — In a decisive move, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) deported 17 individuals on Tuesday, all linked to a significant online financial scam operation. This action aligns with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s commitment to dismantle international criminal organizations operating within the Philippines.

The deportation occurred on the morning of January 21, when the 17 Taiwanese nationals were placed on a direct flight to Taipei after being classified as undesirable aliens by the BI.

This operation underscores the President’s unwavering position that the Philippines will not serve as a sanctuary for foreign syndicates that exploit technology to defraud victims across borders. Under the current administration, there has been a marked increase in collaboration among law enforcement and border control agencies to safeguard the nation’s integrity, security, and international reputation.

The individuals in question were apprehended during a coordinated operation last May, executed by the National Bureau of Investigation Special Task Force (NBI-STF), the NBI Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD), and various government intelligence agencies. Authorities discovered a fully operational online scam hub located in an upscale subdivision in Cebu City.

During the raid, the suspects were caught in the act, actively managing workstations and conducting scam operations without the necessary visas or permits, thus violating Philippine immigration laws. A digital forensic investigation revealed scripts for romance and investment scams, messaging platforms, and other tools designed to deceive victims.

Additionally, several of those deported were found to have outstanding arrest warrants in other countries.

“This decisive action embodies the President’s unequivocal policy: the Philippines will not tolerate foreign criminals who exploit our openness, misuse our laws, and prey on innocent individuals—whether they are Filipinos or foreigners,” stated BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.

“The BI is committed to relentlessly pursuing, arresting, and deporting aliens involved in illegal activities. We are closing our doors to scammers, syndicates, and fugitives who believe they can evade justice under the guise of tourist visas,” Viado emphasized.

Following their deportation, all 17 individuals have been permanently blacklisted and prohibited from reentering the Philippines.
