BRISBANE, Australia – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Government of Australia have formally inaugurated a renewed Strategic Partnership Framework spanning 2026-2030.

This landmark agreement solidifies a long-standing, trusted collaboration aimed at tackling critical humanitarian challenges and bolstering migration governance across the Indo-Pacific region and worldwide.

In a ceremony held in Geneva, IOM Director General Amy Pope and H.E. Clare Walsh, Australia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, officially signed the framework.

Director General Pope emphasized the critical importance of such partnerships in an era of escalating displacement and increasingly complex migration patterns.

“Australia has long been a trusted partner to IOM and to migrants and communities across the region,” stated Pope. “As displacement rises and migration grows more complex, partnerships like this matter more than ever.

Together, we are advancing practical solutions that protect people, strengthen resilience, and ensure migration works for everyone.”

This renewed partnership, building on Australia’s foundational role as an IOM Member State, underscores a shared conviction that expertly managed migration can serve as a potent catalyst for development, stability, and human dignity.

It also reflects Australia’s unwavering commitment to addressing the multifaceted root causes of migration and displacement on both regional and global scales.

The Strategic Partnership Framework outlines several key shared priorities designed to drive tangible outcomes:

Humanitarian Crisis Response:

  • Enhancing effective and coordinated responses to global humanitarian emergencies.

Displacement Solutions & Resilience:

  • Fostering durable solutions for displaced populations and strengthening community resilience.

Safe & Orderly Migration:

  • Facilitating safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways.

Evidence-Based Programming:

  • Delivering efficient, impactful, and needs-driven programs informed by robust evidence.

Inclusivity & Equity:

  • Advancing gender equality, disability inclusion, and social inclusion for all migrants.

Multilateral Cooperation:

  • Strengthening the United Nations system and promoting multilateral collaboration in migration governance.

IOM expressed its profound gratitude to the Government of Australia for its continued partnership and leadership in this vital area.

The Organization reaffirms its dedication to close collaboration with Australia and other stakeholders, ensuring the Strategic Partnership Framework translates into concrete actions that advance safe, orderly, and regular migration and ultimately improve the lives of migrants and communities globally.
