US Intensifies Strikes on Iran Amid Nuclear Threats

BRISBANE, Australia – The United States has significantly intensified its military operations against Iran, launching an eleventh consecutive night of strikes as the Trump administration issued a stark warning regarding potential attacks on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities. This alarming escalation follows a fragile ceasefire and threatens to ignite a broader conflict in an already volatile region.

US Central Command (Centcom) asserted that the sustained aerial bombardment aims to “further degrade Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial shipping” in the critical Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media, however, reported widespread activation of air defenses across its territory, with explosions illuminating the skies over Tehran, Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, and the strategic city of Bushehr, home to the nation’s sole nuclear power plant.

These renewed hostilities emerge after a period of relative calm, shattered by renewed contention over control of the vital Strait of Hormuz waterway. While a ceasefire had been agreed upon in April, it rapidly unraveled following allegations of Iranian aggression against commercial vessels and subsequent US retaliatory strikes.

Centcom detailed its targets, which included Iranian military operations centers, maritime assets, aircraft hangars, drone storage facilities, and essential military logistics infrastructure. The command further accused Iran of orchestrating “over 30 unwarranted attacks” on commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz in the past three months, imperiling mariners and undermining freedom of navigation. Despite these threats, Centcom maintained that the waterway remains “open for commercial vessel transit.”

The regional reverberations of this escalation are already manifest. Early Wednesday, Kuwait’s army reported engaging with drone attacks emanating from Iran, while Bahrain and Jordan confirmed intercepting both drone and missile strikes.

Adding a grave dimension to the conflict, President Trump explicitly threatened to target a complex known as “Pickaxe Mountain,” an underground nuclear site near Natanz. This facility is widely suspected of housing an undeclared uranium enrichment program. Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump declared, “We’ll be hitting that area pretty soon, and very heavily,” adding a chilling note that while he wouldn’t typically disclose targets, “there’s not a thing they can do about it.”

In response, Iran’s Khatam Al-Anbiya military command warned that any such attack would be perceived as “an expansion of war in the region,” vowing retaliatory strikes against “all the interests of America, the allies, and supporters,” according to state-run broadcaster IRIB.

Further complicating the regional landscape, Trump issued a direct threat to “take care of” the Houthi rebels in Yemen if the Iran-backed militant group proceeded with its announced blockade of Saudi ports. This followed a Houthi media official’s declaration of closing the Bab al-Mandab Strait – the Red Sea’s southern gateway – to Saudi vessels.

The Red Sea has become an increasingly crucial conduit for Saudi oil shipments amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has effectively choked off access through the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthi threat immediately impacted global shipping, with two tankers loaded with Saudi crude, bound for China and India from Yanbu, executing immediate U-turns towards the Suez Canal. This underscores the profound risk to international maritime commerce and the already volatile fluctuations in global fuel prices.

The financial toll of this protracted conflict continues to mount for the United States. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth informed the Senate Appropriations Committee that the war has now cost the US approximately $37.5 billion – an increase of nearly $8 billion since May. Hegseth cautioned that military training would face severe curtailment unless Congress approved an urgent funding injection.

The renewed strikes and escalating rhetoric underscore a rapidly deteriorating situation, pushing the US and Iran closer to a full-scale confrontation with profound and unpredictable consequences for global stability and the future of the Middle East.
