A Grade 9 student, identified as Nael Jalani, circumvented security to enter the campus armed with a high-powered rifle and a .45-caliber pistol. Inside a classroom, he opened fire, killing a Grade 10 student before taking his own life. Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso confirmed the assailant’s use of a body-worn camera, broadcasting the atrocity live on Facebook, an account that has since been disabled. The disturbing footage, briefly circulated by local media, depicted a gun barrel menacingly sweeping a hallway before entering a classroom, followed by gunfire and the screams of fleeing children. Two additional students sustained injuries in the attack.

The Department of Education, in a separate Senate committee hearing last month, underscored the urgent need for increased support to prevent a “copycat phenomenon,” noting a worrying surge in post-shooting incidents, including bomb threats, stabbings, and the recovery of illicit firearms and ammunition in schools.
