RAMALLAH, OCCUPIED WEST BANK, Palestine – Disturbing reports from human rights organizations and direct testimonies reveal a pattern of grave abuses by Israeli forces against Palestinian women and children, both within detention facilities and during military incursions. These accounts highlight systematic ill-treatment, severe physical harm, and a shocking disregard for international humanitarian law.

Systematic Abuse in Israeli Prisons: Women Report Brutality and Degradation

Palestinian women held in Israeli prisons are enduring a regime of systematic abuse, including forced hijab removal, brutal beatings, and exposure to chemical agents. Reports from the Palestinian Prisoners’ Information Office detail egregious violations that have led to severe health complications, with calls for immediate international intervention intensifying.

Prison officers are accused of forcibly removing detainees’ hijabs during inspections, followed by isolation and deliberate degradation through demands to undo braids. These acts reportedly precede severe beatings, with women forced to lie face down on cell floors for extended periods.

In particularly alarming incidents, guards allegedly deployed pepper spray within a room housing 15 Palestinian women, including elderly detainees, causing severe choking and vomiting. Witnesses describe women collapsing, losing the ability to walk, and requiring assistance to be removed from the affected area. In a shocking event, gas was reportedly released inside bathing facilities while detainees were showering, leading to a pregnant woman’s critical health deterioration and urgent transfer to a prison clinic.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Information Office has issued an urgent plea for international intervention to halt these violations and ensure adequate medical care for all injured, ill, and pregnant detainees, specifically imploring the International Committee of the Red Cross to act swiftly.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club reports that 87 Palestinian women are currently held in Israeli prisons, 21 of whom are under administrative detention – a practice allowing indefinite detention without charge or trial. The organization highlights a burgeoning scabies outbreak among detainees, attributing its spread to severe restrictions on hygiene supplies, clean clothing, and deteriorating sanitary conditions.

Concerns also persist for Palestinian journalist Bushra al-Taweel, who has reportedly endured nearly 50 days in isolation under harsh conditions, including beatings and verbal abuse. Her administrative detention has been renewed for an additional four months. Her repeated transfers between prisons are reportedly obstructing legal oversight and preventing access to her legal counsel. International human rights organizations are urged to pressure Israeli authorities to end her isolation and protect her fundamental rights.

Assaults on Palestinian Civilians: Children and People with Disabilities Targeted

Beyond the prison walls, Israeli occupation forces are documented assaulting Palestinian residents, including children on their way to school and people with disabilities, during military incursions into areas like Al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank.

In a separate, brutal incident, Israeli settlers, backed by IDF soldiers, attacked Palestinian farmers and set olive trees ablaze in the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah. During this assault, veteran Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, a 64-year-old American, was documenting the attack when settlers began beating her. She sustained stab wounds, a broken rib, four broken vertebrae, and a severe hand injury.

These distressing reports collectively underscore an urgent need for global scrutiny and intervention regarding the treatment of Palestinian women and children, particularly those in critical medical need, and all civilians subjected to violence by Israeli forces and settlers. The international community is being called upon to demand accountability and uphold fundamental human rights.
