MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) is taking a proactive approach to student and teacher health, announcing a significant “wellness break” for public schools from Oct. 27-30.

Citing the combined impact of recent calamities and a surge in influenza cases, Education Secretary Sonny Angara called the decision essential for the well-being of the education community.

The move signals a potential shift in how the country values the health and mental state of educators and students, recognizing these factors as critical to effective learning.

“This break is a much-needed respite,” says a mother and public school teacher. “The kids have been stressed and getting sick. It’s a relief to know their well-being is being prioritized.”

The break necessitates adjustments to the academic calendar, including the rescheduling of the midyear In-Service Training (INSET) for teachers.

While the INSET programs will be rescheduled, the DepEd has stressed that professional development remains a priority.

Classes will resume on Nov. 3, after the All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day holidays.

The DepEd’s decision also acknowledges the potential economic impact of school closures, a factor carefully considered alongside the health benefits.

However, officials emphasized that the well-being of students and teachers is paramount.

The DepEd’s decision could serve as a model for other nations grappling with similar challenges, underscoring the importance of prioritizing health in the face of adversity.
