Hungary Closes Doors: Visa Ban Hits Filipino, Georgian, Armenian Workers

BRISBANE, Australia — In a decisive policy shift that marks a new era in the nation’s migration strategy, Hungary has officially suspended the issuance of new worker visas to citizens of the Philippines, Georgia, and Armenia, effective immediately as of Friday, June 5, 2026.

Government authorities have confirmed that this measure represents the beginning of a comprehensive overhaul designed to regulate and control the inflow of foreign labor into the country.

This directive fulfills a central campaign promise made by Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s Tisza party, which secured a landslide mandate in the April 12 elections. The victory ended the 16-year tenure of former leader Viktor Orban, who ran on a platform committed to halting new visa approvals for workers from outside the European Union by June.

Government spokeswoman Vanda Szondi articulated the rationale behind the reform during a media briefing, emphasizing that the policy addresses growing economic concerns.

Specifically, the administration argues that the presence of foreign workers exerts significant downward pressure on domestic wage levels, potentially suppressing earning potential for local citizens.

Paradoxically, official statistics indicate that foreign nationals constitute only two percent of Hungary’s entire active workforce. Despite this seemingly small percentage, the reality reveals a heavy dependency; vital economic sectors such as services and manufacturing remain reliant on overseas manpower to sustain operations and growth.

Concurrent with the visa suspension, authorities are moving to revoke specific administrative decrees. These regulations previously permitted manpower recruitment agencies to facilitate the entry and deployment of workers from the three affected nations through a streamlined process. That mechanism is now being terminated, effective immediately.

Crucially, the new regulations do not retroactively affect those already within the system. Employees currently residing and working in Hungary from the named countries retain the right to apply for visa extensions. Furthermore, any employment permit applications submitted prior to the enforcement of this ban will still undergo individual review and assessment.

The government characterizes these changes not as a final solution but as a foundational first step toward establishing a long-term, sustainable framework for managing labor migration.

Nevertheless, the decision has triggered immediate apprehension within the business community. Some of Hungary’s largest foreign investors have issued stark warnings, cautioning that a complete stoppage in the flow of new guest workers could severely disrupt production chains, create critical labor shortages, and ultimately act as a drag on the broader national economy.
