BRISBANE, Australia – In Venezuela, a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the relentless dedication of international rescue teams unfolded in Catia La Mar, as a man was miraculously pulled from the rubble eight days after twin earthquakes ravaged the region. This extraordinary rescue defies the odds, offering hope amidst widespread devastation.

Hernán Gil, a security guard, emerged from beneath an estimated 140 tons of debris, his survival a testament to an inexplicable pocket of resilience within the destruction. Rescuers, a multinational contingent comprising specialists from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States, meticulously worked for over 100 hours to reach him. A Chilean firefighter involved in the perilous operation described it as “without a doubt the most complex and technically difficult” of his career.

The dramatic discovery began on Sunday when Allan Madrigal, a paramedic with the Costa Rican Red Cross, heard faint cries for help. Initially doubting his own senses, Madrigal’s confirmation ignited a determined race against time. Gil, found in a small concrete booth within the basement of the Galerías Playa Grande mall’s parking lot, was shielded from the crushing force of the collapse. “He has told us that he does not even have a crushed nail,” reported another Costa Rican Red Cross worker, illustrating the improbable nature of his escape from serious injury.

Throughout the grueling rescue, Gil was sustained with water and intravenous fluids, a crucial intervention in his extended ordeal. The inherent dangers of the operation were underscored by several partial collapses of the access ducts built by rescuers. Yet, through the night, determination prevailed, culminating in visual contact with Gil. Footage captured by a small camera inserted into the rubble showed a Chilean firefighter instructing him to turn his head, revealing a bloodshot eye but also a glimmer of life. Rescuers had already provided him with a face mask and goggles to protect him from the dust and debris generated by their painstaking efforts.

Marco Antonio Franco of the Mexican Red Cross characterized Gil as “a cheerful man,” a remarkable description given his predicament. Franco recounted Gil’s surprisingly upbeat demeanor, even requesting specific flavors of hydration drinks. “He himself drives us on, telling us to carry on. He recognizes our team members, saying, ‘How nice that you came back and that you’re with me again,'” Franco added, highlighting Gil’s profound connection with his rescuers. Conversations about his family and the challenging rescue sustained both Gil and the teams.

For paramedic Allan Madrigal, this first international rescue mission proved transformative. “The lad who came here a week ago is not the same one that will return to Costa Rica, believe me,” he told reporters, reflecting the profound impact of witnessing such a powerful display of human perseverance and the collaborative spirit of aid.

As the confirmed death toll from the June 24th quakes reaches 2,595 and tens of thousands remain missing, Hernán Gil’s survival stands as a powerful symbol of hope, a testament to the miracles that can emerge from the darkest depths of disaster.
