MANILA, Philippines – In the high-stakes arena of Vice President Sara Duterte’s ongoing impeachment trial, one figure consistently commands attention: Atty. Kristine Ferrer. A partner at the esteemed Fortun, Narvasa, and Salazar Law Firm (FNS), Ferrer, affectionately known as “Tine” to her peers, is a legal powerhouse whose strategic acumen and sharp intellect are central to the defense’s efforts.

Ferrer’s trajectory to prominence is marked by a potent combination of academic rigor and professional distinction. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a lawyer, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from Ateneo de Davao University and was admitted to the Bar in 2011. This dual expertise provides her with a unique advantage, particularly in complex financial and corporate legal matters.

Her legal practice spans a broad and critical spectrum, encompassing arbitration, corporate and commercial law, corporate rehabilitation, intricate litigation and dispute resolution, and specialized taxation. Before joining FNS, Ferrer honed her skills as a tax lawyer at Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co., a foundational experience that propelled her to head FNS’s tax department, specializing in high-stakes mergers and acquisitions. Her involvement in significant local and international transactions handled by the firm underscores her profound impact.

Ferrer’s achievements are not merely theoretical; they are demonstrably impactful. She spearheaded the team responsible for the monumental ₱25 billion tax compromise settlement between Mighty Corp. and the Bureau of Internal Revenue – a deal widely recognized as the largest of its kind in the nation’s history. Furthermore, she expertly navigated the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) requirements for the ₱45 billion acquisition of Mighty Corp.’s assets by JT International (Philippines), Inc. Her team also recently secured a rare and remarkable ₱152.5 million refund for erroneously paid taxes on royalties before the Court of Tax Appeals, solidifying her reputation as a formidable force in tax litigation.

Beyond her corporate and tax prowess, Ferrer is a highly regarded litigator, successfully representing clients in a diverse range of civil, criminal, commercial, and intra-corporate disputes, including high-profile cases. Her advocacy skills were evident early in her career, winning the First National Debate on International Humanitarian Law, where she was also awarded Best Debater, and reaching the finals of the ANC CVC Law Debates. She has also contributed to legal education as a lecturer in Taxation Law and Special Proceedings at Ateneo de Davao University College of Law and in accounting at its School of Business and Governance.

Ferrer’s influence extends beyond the courtroom. She has been globally recognized as one of the “10 Most Successful Leaders to Follow in Asia” by Tycoon Success Magazine (2023) and among the “Top 10 Consulting Company Leaders from the Philippines” by CEO Insights Asia (2023). Her expertise in corporate law earned her the distinction of being the Exclusive Member for Corporate Law in the Philippines by Global Law Experts for 2026, and The Legal 500 Asia Pacific has acknowledged her as a Recommended Lawyer for Projects and Energy, and for Corporate and M&A. Further solidifying her strategic capabilities, she holds a Certification in Negotiation Mastery from Harvard Business School Online.

During the recent impeachment proceedings, Ferrer’s assertive cross-examination style, particularly during exchanges with prosecution counsel, has drawn considerable attention, prompting Senate instructions to moderate the intensity. Defense spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa clarified that Ferrer’s “highly charged” approach stemmed from her distinct legal style and carried no disrespect, emphasizing the defense panel’s trust in their counsels’ individual approaches.

As the impeachment trial continues, Atty. Kristine Ferrer stands as a testament to strategic brilliance, deep legal expertise, and unyielding advocacy, playing a pivotal role in shaping the defense’s narrative and impact.
