Beijing Rebuts Philippine “Extortion” Claims Amid Rising Tensions

MANILA, Philippines – In Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday, August 14, vigorously refuted accusations from Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., who alleged that Beijing is employing “extortion and blackmail” against Filipino nationals in China. This statement comes as tensions between the two nations escalate, fueled by disputes in the South China Sea and recent law enforcement actions.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun, addressing a press conference, asserted that “foreign nationals in China should abide by Chinese laws and regulations.” Guo emphasized that Chinese immigration authorities operate strictly “in accordance with the law and protect the lawful rights and interests of the personnel concerned,” adding unequivocally that “the actions do not target any specific country.”

However, the Ministry’s remarks took a sharp turn, directly implicating Secretary Teodoro. Guo noted, “It is learned that it was exactly this defense secretary who personally led the armed forces to seize and detain Chinese nationals lawfully working in the Philippines.” The spokesperson went on to criticize Teodoro’s “consistent attacks and smears against China,” warning that such actions “harm not only bilateral relations,” but ultimately, “it is the interests of the Philippines and all its people that will bear the brunt.”

This forceful rebuttal from Beijing underscores a hardening stance in its diplomatic engagement with Manila. The accusation against Teodoro of personally directing operations against Chinese nationals suggests a deeper level of concern within the Chinese government regarding the Philippines’ recent actions. The warning about the “interests of the Philippines” bearing the brunt could be interpreted as a veiled threat of further economic or diplomatic repercussions.

The exchange highlights a concerning trajectory in China-Philippines relations, where public accusations and strong condemnations are becoming increasingly frequent. With both sides standing firm on their positions, the international community watches closely for potential escalations in a strategically critical region.
