CAIRO, Egypt – A Cairo Criminal Court has dealt a significant blow to organized crime, sentencing renowned Egyptian TV producer and presenter Sarah Khalifa, along with eleven co-defendants, to death by hanging in a high-profile drug trafficking case. The verdict, delivered on Saturday, September 5, 2026, concludes a major trial involving a sophisticated network accused of manufacturing and distributing narcotics.

The court also imposed life imprisonment on nine other defendants, while seven individuals were acquitted. This ruling addresses all 28 defendants involved in what Egyptian media has termed the “major drugs case.”

The Network’s Operations and Khalifa’s Alleged Role

Prosecutors detailed the intricate workings of the criminal organization, asserting that it was led by several individuals, including two fugitives. The network allegedly recruited various members to execute different stages of their illicit operation, from sourcing raw materials to manufacturing and distribution.

Investigations revealed that the group systematically imported materials crucial for narcotics production into Egypt with the intent to produce and sell drugs. Charges against the defendants also included unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Crucially, investigations allege that Sarah Khalifa provided significant financial support for the operation and traveled internationally to meet with two of the alleged ringleaders. Her role reportedly involved coordinating their activities with other members of the criminal enterprise.

Authorities involved in the extensive investigation successfully seized over 750 kilograms of synthetic drugs and precursor materials, alongside equipment believed to have been used in the manufacturing process.

Before issuing the death sentences, the court formally referred the cases of Khalifa and the other defendants facing capital punishment to Egypt’s Grand Mufti for a religious opinion, a mandatory procedural step in Egyptian law.

This verdict underscores Egypt’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and sends a clear message regarding the severe consequences for those involved in such illicit activities.
