Israel Arrests Suspects in Attacks on U.S. Journalist, European Diplomats Amid Global Pressure

RAMALLAH, Palestine – In response to mounting international condemnation, Israeli forces have arrested ten suspects linked to violent attacks on a Washington Post photojournalist and a delegation of European diplomats in the occupied West Bank. This unprecedented police action follows a wave of violence perpetrated by Israeli armed settlers against Palestinians, particularly during the olive harvest season, and highlights ongoing human rights violations in the region.

The European Union (EU) has issued a strong statement condemning the recent assaults on its diplomatic personnel, journalists, and Palestinian civilians. The statement emphasized the need for full legal accountability and effective measures to halt recurring violence, particularly during the olive harvest. It specifically condemned the attacks on diplomats from France, Belgium, and Poland, who were confronted and physically assaulted by masked Israeli settlers near the village of Taybeh, east of Ramallah.

The EU urged Israel to adhere to International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law and to cease the expansion of settlements, especially during this critical harvest period. The statement reflects the growing concern among European nations regarding the safety of their citizens in the region.

The arrests of the ten suspects occurred during a pre-dawn operation, following intense international pressure from the United States and several European countries. Among those attacked was Heidi Levine, a U.S. citizen and photojournalist for the Washington Post, who sustained multiple injuries, including a broken finger, while covering the olive harvest. In a separate incident, the European diplomats were attacked, and a Belgian diplomatic vehicle was damaged.

Reliable sources revealed that members of Israeli forces disguised as Israeli settlers carried out armed attacks on Palestinians. Because the victims were diplomats, authorities felt compelled to arrest the suspects, but this may only serve media headlines, as they are expected to be released after the photo opportunity.

While these arrests address the violence against international personnel, reports indicate that the Israeli armed settlers involved in attacks on Palestinian farmers during the same period largely remain unpunished. Israeli forces stated that the suspects were arrested on suspicion of involvement in acts of violence, violating a closed military zone order, and illegal construction. Their identities have not been officially released, but Israeli Army Radio reported them to be Israeli citizens. Historically, prosecutions of Israeli settlers for violence against Palestinians or international observers have been rare.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee welcomed the arrests on social media, calling them a “very positive development” in the pursuit of justice for Levine. France, Belgium, and Poland have also urged Israel to take decisive action against the perpetrators.

Footage released during the operation showed at least one suspect wearing ritual tzitzit tassels, typically worn by observant Jewish men. The video also revealed the discovery of slingshots at one property, which can be used to hurl stones. During the attack on Levine, masked settlers reportedly hurled stones at Palestinian olive harvesters.

The operation involved police, military forces, and the Shin Bet domestic security service. Israeli police commissioner Daniel Levy affirmed that “the law applies to everyone, regardless of identity or affiliation,” emphasizing the commitment to impartial law enforcement.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and the military have attributed the attack on the diplomats to “Israeli rioters.” However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially suggested that the diplomats entered a “sensitive area” without military coordination, casting doubt on the circumstances surrounding the attack on Levine. Levine herself has stated that she was assaulted by masked men wearing tzitzit tassels.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has offered an apology, asserting that the “violent rioters” who attacked Levine do not represent Israel’s values. Human rights organizations, such as Yes Din, report a significant increase in settler attacks against Palestinians, with at least 170 incidents recorded since September 27. Journalists, Israeli activists, and foreign observers have increasingly become targets of this escalating violence.

In a related development, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband warned international companies and individuals against participating in Israel’s tender for settlement construction in the E1 area east of occupied Jerusalem. He threatened sanctions against entities involved in settlement expansion, urging them to consider the legal, reputational, and economic risks associated with such participation.

The E1 project is one of the most controversial settlement schemes due to its strategic location between Jerusalem and the settlement of Ma’ale Adumim. If implemented, it would sever the northern and southern West Bank, isolating occupied Jerusalem from its Palestinian surroundings and threatening the territorial contiguity necessary for an independent Palestinian state.
