ANACONDA, Montana – Michael Paul Brown, the suspect in the shooting that claimed four lives at The Owl Bar here, is in custody after a weeklong manhunt that gripped the state in fear.

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Brown’s arrest on Friday (Aug. 8, 2025), bringing relief to a community reeling from the tragedy.

Brown, an Army veteran, was found armed approximately five and a half miles from the scene of the Aug. 1 shooting and taken into custody around 2 p.m. local time.

He is now being held by Anaconda-Deer Lodge County authorities.

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen confirmed that public tips played a crucial role in locating Brown, who was found in an area previously searched by law enforcement.

“One week ago today, our small community of Anaconda faced an unimaginable tragedy,” Gianforte said during a Friday evening press conference.

“Our dedicated law enforcement officers acted swiftly, committing themselves to finding this suspect without delay.”

The shooting at The Owl Bar has been described as the deadliest in Montana in a decade.

The victims have been identified as Daniel Baillie, 59; Nancy Kelley, 64; David Leach, 70; and Tony Palm, 74.

Massive Manhunt Concluded

The search for Brown involved over 250 law enforcement personnel from more than 39 local, state, and federal agencies, navigating the rugged terrain of western Montana.

Authorities believe Brown briefly returned to his residence after the shooting before moving to a nearby location, discarding clothing and personal items.

He then stole a vehicle, a white Ford F-150 truck, which ultimately led to his identification.

“He was recognized almost immediately when he entered that vehicle,” Knudsen explained.

While the stolen truck was recovered, the search was complicated by the presence of another similar vehicle in the area.

On Thursday, approximately 130 personnel were deployed in the vicinity where Brown was eventually apprehended.

“We believe this increased presence contributed to flushing him out into an area we had previously searched,” Knudsen said.

The U.S. Marshals Service, alongside local and state law enforcement agencies, made the arrest.

Brown is currently at the Butte-Silver Bow Detention Center.

Charges against Brown will be filed soon.

Community Grapples with Grief

Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Attorney Morgan Smith confirmed that the victims’ families have been informed of Brown’s arrest.

“Tonight, the community of Anaconda can finally rest,” Smith declared.

The impact of the shooting is deeply felt throughout the community.

“It feels surreal. The weight of it all is overwhelming,” said Cassandra Dutra, a bartender at The Owl Bar.

Beyond the immediate grief, questions are being raised about Brown’s mental health.

His niece, Clare Boyle, shared concerns about his struggles following his military service, which included a deployment to Iraq from January 2001 to May 2005, and the loss of both parents.

“The system failed… We as a community failed to recognize the signs,” Boyle said.

As authorities focus on pursuing justice for the victims’ families, the community of Anaconda is left to grapple with the aftermath of the devastating event and the questions it raises about mental health support for veterans.
