PASAY CITY, Philippines –  Airport authorities on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) arrested a passenger destined for Hong Kong after uncovering a cache of undeclared cash hidden in his luggage.

The haul, amounting to ₱1.2 million and $580,000, was suspected of being laundered out of the country.

Mark Almase, NAIA-Customs Deputy Collector for Passenger Services, disclosed that the Filipino traveler, who was not immediately identified, failed to present the necessary clearance or written authorization from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas required for transporting large sums of money out of the country.

Personnel from the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP AVSEGROUP) flagged the passenger for additional examination of his luggage during routine security checks.

A search of his luggage subsequently revealed bundles of cash.

“This operation underscores the critical need for inter-agency collaboration among airport authorities at our premier international hub, where various infractions may arise and must be addressed,” said Police Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy, acting director of the AVSEGROUP.

The passenger, along with the confiscated currency, is now in the custody of the Bureau of Customs.

Authorities are conducting an extensive investigation, including tracing serial numbers, to ascertain the source and intended use of the undeclared funds.
