MANILA, Philippines – AirAsia MOVE, the digital travel platform of Capital A, has been slapped with a P6 million fine by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) for posting excessive and unreasonable airfares, a move hailed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) as a victory for Filipino consumers. The penalty underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring fair and affordable travel for all Filipinos, a key directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The CAB’s swift action comes in response to public outcry over inflated prices displayed on the AirAsia MOVE platform, particularly during peak travel seasons. The DOTr lauded the decision, emphasizing its significance in protecting the rights of the commuting public.

“This P6 million penalty sends a clear message,” stated a DOTr spokesperson. “The government will not tolerate any form of abuse against Filipino passengers. We are committed to holding accountable those who violate established consumer protection regulations.”

The case highlights the growing scrutiny of online travel platforms and their pricing practices. While these platforms offer convenience and accessibility, concerns have been raised about potential price gouging and unfair practices that disadvantage consumers.

The DOTr reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the traveling public and ensuring that all airlines and travel platforms adhere to fair pricing standards. The AirAsia MOVE fine serves as a warning to the industry, signaling a proactive approach to consumer protection and a zero-tolerance policy for exploitative practices.

This development is expected to have a significant impact on the online travel industry, prompting greater transparency and accountability in pricing strategies. Filipino travelers can expect increased vigilance from government agencies in ensuring fair and affordable access to air travel.
