Yinon Levi, an Israeli settler who was previously sanctioned by the U.S. for extremist violence, is suspected of murdering Palestinian journalist Odeh Hathalin. Hathalin, 31, was a father of three, an English teacher, and a dedicated activist from Umm Al-Kheir. UMM AL-KHAIR, West Bank – The brutal killing of Odeh Hathalin, a prominent Palestinian activist and consultant for the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land,” has sent shockwaves through the international community, igniting outrage and intensifying scrutiny of escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

Hathalin was fatally shot Monday in his home village of Umm al-Khair during a confrontation involving Yinon Levi, an Israeli settler previously sanctioned by the United States government for extremist violence.

Hathalin, a vital voice documenting military actions and the systematic displacement of the Masafer Yatta community by Israeli settlers, has become the latest victim in a surge of escalating violence.

His death underscores the perilous reality faced by Palestinians living under occupation and the impunity enjoyed by some Israeli settlers.

Levi was briefly sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Treasury in April 2024 for leading “groups of violent extremists engaged in actions creating an atmosphere of fear in the West Bank.”

These actions, according to the department, included assaults on Palestinian civilians, threats of violence, arson, and property destruction.

Despite his background, Levi was removed from the sanctions list earlier this year.

He was arrested at the scene but released to house arrest on Tuesday, sparking further outrage.

Israeli police issued a statement acknowledging “the arrest of an individual for questioning regarding reckless conduct resulting in death and unlawful use of a firearm,” but did not name Levi.

A chilling video, initially posted by “No Other Land” co-director and Israeli investigative journalist Yuval Abraham, appears to show Levi wielding a handgun and firing shots during the confrontation.

The footage depicts Levi grappling with a villager and pushing away the person filming before firing multiple shots in the vicinity of fleeing Palestinians.

While the target remains unclear, a separate video shows Hathalin bleeding on the ground, later succumbing to his injuries.

“This is how Israel erases us – one life at a time,” lamented Basel Adra, a Palestinian journalist and co-director of “No Other Land,” mourning the loss of his close friend.

The killing occurred against a backdrop of escalating violence in the West Bank since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.

The United Nations reports that at least 964 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as of July 15, 2025.

Alaa al-Hathalin, Odeh’s cousin, told media that Levi was notorious in the community for his frequent attacks.

He described how Levi, armed, confronted villagers protesting the operation of a bulldozer and “started shooting… and shot Odeh in the chest.”

Hathalin leaves behind three young sons.

Levi’s lawyer, Avichai Hajbi, claimed the shooting occurred in a “life-threatening situation” where Levi was “attacked by a mob throwing stones.”

Police initially sought to extend Levi’s detention, arguing that his continued detention was necessary to prevent obstruction of justice, but the court denied the extension.

Ofer Cassif, a left-wing member of Israel’s parliament, has called for a full investigation into Hathalin’s death, condemning the “paralysis of law enforcement and the complete sense of immunity enjoyed by violent settlers.”

The tragedy is compounded by the recent detention and deportation of Hathalin from San Francisco International Airport, where he was scheduled to participate in an interfaith speaking forum.
