BRISBANE, Australia – In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic tensions, Australia has expelled Iran’s ambassador and suspended embassy operations, citing definitive intelligence linking Tehran to orchestrated antisemitic attacks on Australian soil.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the alleged actions as “dangerous acts of aggression” intended to incite hatred and division within the Australian community.

The unprecedented move, marking the first expulsion of a foreign ambassador since World War II, followed an Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) assessment that directly connects Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to two arson attacks last year: one targeting a Jewish-owned restaurant in Sydney and another on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne.

The IRGC, a powerful branch of the Iranian military, is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.

“These were extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil,” Albanese declared at a press conference, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens and preserving social cohesion.

Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other Iranian diplomatic staff have been given seven days to leave the country.

Simultaneously, Australia has suspended operations at its embassy in Iran, citing safety concerns for consular officials.

Australians currently in Iran have been advised to depart if safe passage can be secured.

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess detailed the meticulous planning and execution of the attacks, alleging they were “directed by the IRGC through a series of overseas cut-out facilitators to coordinators that found their way to tasking Australians.”

The attacks, which occurred in October 2024 (Sydney restaurant) and December 2024 (Melbourne synagogue), have amplified existing anxieties about rising antisemitism in Australia.

Two men have already been charged by counter-terrorism investigators in connection with the synagogue attack.

“I’ve said many times that the Australian people want two things: They want killing in the Middle East to stop, and they don’t want conflict in the Middle East brought here. Iran has sought to do just that,” Albanese said, emphasizing the government’s resolve to prevent foreign conflicts from infiltrating Australian society.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has urged Australians to reconsider travel to Iran, citing the government’s “extremely limited” ability to provide consular assistance within the country.

While antisemitic incidents have reportedly surged in Australia since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict, ASIO clarified that not all such incidents are attributable to Iranian influence.

The agency, however, continues to investigate potential Iranian involvement in other attacks.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has vehemently denied the accusations, dismissing them as “baseless” and “ridiculous.”

The Iranian embassy in Canberra has yet to issue a formal response to requests for comment.

The Australian government’s decisive actions are a clear signal of its commitment to combating antisemitism, safeguarding national security, and protecting its citizens from foreign interference.
