MANILA, Philippines — In a decisive move to curb the growing crisis of online gambling addiction, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has ordered all banks and e-wallets to sever ties with online gambling platforms.

The order is contained in Memorandum M-2025-029.

The directive prompted GCash, the ubiquitous e-wallet used by millions of Filipinos, to announce the removal of gambling features from its platform.

But the problem is more than just deleting an app icon; it’s about confronting the devastating impact of online gambling on Filipinos’ lives.

While the shutdown of Philippine offshore gaming operators, which primarily catered to foreign clientele, often Chinese, was met with relief, a more significant threat has emerged: Filipino-facing online gambling applications.

For the first time, ordinary Filipinos, even students, are succumbing to the allure of quick riches, fueling a national addiction crisis.

“I’ve seen them myself. Lowly Filipinos burning the midnight oil, eyes glued to their screens, desperately hoping that the next spin, the next bet, will deliver salvation,” said a concerned citizen.

“These individuals, often living on the margins, whisper prayers to luck instead of faith, and when the money runs dry, their nightmare begins.”

The desperation fueled by online gambling addiction is driving a surge in crime.

Reports of estafa, qualified theft, and scams against family members are on the rise, with individuals even pawning ATM cards to fund their next bet.

This desperation has created fertile ground for predatory lending apps, which harass borrowers, dox their contacts, and publicly humiliate them, turning the gambler’s shame into a public spectacle.

This is a vicious cycle: online gambling leads to crime, which leads to debt and ultimately, despair.

Behind every statistic lies a broken family — a mother unable to afford rice because the father gambled away his wages, a student forced to drop out of school due to lost tuition, a child wondering why the lights are off because the electric bill was lost to a digital slot machine.

“The BSP’s decisive action is not merely a cold regulation. It’s an act of mercy, a vital barrier protecting Filipinos from themselves,” a bank executive said.

While some may decry it as a restriction or unfair, the question remains: how fair is it that a poor man earning a meager hundred pesos a day loses it all before midnight on a phone game?

How fair is it that his losses become the profits of criminal syndicates?

This is not just a matter of policy. It’s a rescue mission.

“If online gambling remains just one tap away, the Philippines risks losing not only its pesos but also its people,” declared a foreign observer.
