NEW YORK CITY – The Philippines has commended a growing number of countries for their recognition of the State of Palestine, underscoring its long-standing support for a two-state solution as the most viable path to peace in the Middle East.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) lauded the recent acknowledgments from France, Portugal, Australia, Monaco, Canada, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Andorra, announced during the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine in New York City.

“The Philippines welcomes the recognition…where states are speaking in solidarity for stopping war and suffering in Gaza,” the DFA stated in a post on X.

“The Philippines has always stood for a two-state solution as the only viable path to peace in the Middle East,” the DFA declared.

The high-level meeting, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, resumed Monday (Sept. 22, 2025) at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The gathering builds on a UN General Assembly resolution endorsing the New York Declaration, which emerged from an initial high-level summit in July and championed the implementation of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Enrique Manalo, a former foreign affairs secretary, represented the Philippines at the conference, accompanied by DFA Assistant Secretary Maria Teresa Almojuela.

Before the conference, Australia, Canada, and the UK formally recognized an “independent and sovereign State of Palestine,” signaling a growing international momentum towards a two-state resolution.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stressed that his country’s decision was part of a broader international effort to “build new momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages taken in the atrocities of October 7, 2023.”
