SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt – Egypt will host ceasefire talks between Israeli and Hamas representatives here on Monday, aiming to capitalize on the “momentum” generated by US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan for Gaza.

The announcement comes as intense Israeli attacks continue in Gaza City and other areas of the devastated Palestinian territory.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, in a statement released on Saturday, indicated the talks would focus on “the ground conditions and details of the exchange of all Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners,” with the ultimate goal of ending the two-year war and alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.

High-level representatives, including Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have been traveling to Egypt in recent days in preparation for the negotiations.

Trump, in a social media post on Sunday, touted “very positive discussions with Hamas and countries from all over the world” on the ceasefire proposal.

He added that technical teams would meet in Egypt to “work through and clarify the final details,” expressing hope that the first phase of the agreement would be completed this week.

However, reports suggest tensions remain high.

Trump reportedly became angry when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed reservations about celebrating the peace proposal, highlighting the complexities of the situation.

Meanwhile, global protests in support of Palestinians in Gaza took place on Sunday.

In Amsterdam, an estimated 250,000 people marched, while thousands more held demonstrations in Ankara, Turkey, and Karachi, Pakistan.

Hamas has stated it will release all remaining hostages if Israel withdraws from Gaza and “proper field conditions are met,” setting the stage for potentially difficult negotiations here.

The outcome of the talks could prove significant in determining the future of the region and the lives of millions caught in the ongoing conflict.
