Gaza Deal: Trump’s Shadow Looms Over Netanyahu as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

GAZA CITY – A new agreement aimed at releasing hostages and halting the devastating conflict in Gaza is being touted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a diplomatic victory.

However, observers are increasingly pointing to United States President Donald Trump as the driving force behind the deal, raising doubts about Netanyahu’s autonomy and the long-term implications for the region.

While Netanyahu has publicly credited his collaboration with Trump and his team for the agreement, Trump himself has painted a different picture.

In a recent conversation with an Israeli journalist, Trump claimed he pressured a reluctant Netanyahu into accepting the deal’s terms, stating, “I told Bibi, this is your chance for victory.”

This revelation underscores the precarious position Netanyahu finds himself in, facing mounting international criticism for Israel’s military actions and growing isolation.

Trump’s influence over Netanyahu has become strikingly apparent, particularly following the U.S. ultimatum to Hamas on the proposed agreement.

Recent communications from Trump have revealed that Israel had already agreed to a preliminary withdrawal line within Gaza as part of the hostage exchange.

Trump stated that a ceasefire would take effect immediately upon Hamas’s agreement.

For months, Netanyahu has been walking a tightrope, balancing his commitment to defeating Hamas with the need to appease his far-right coalition partners, who staunchly oppose any agreement that leaves Hamas intact.

Global Condemnation

Meanwhile, the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza has drawn global condemnation, and many Israelis, increasingly skeptical of achieving a decisive victory, are eager for a resolution that secures the return of the hostages.

The dynamic has shifted dramatically as Trump appears to be prioritizing his broader Middle East interests, including relations with Turkey and Qatar, both of which have been critical of Israel.

This shift was evident when Trump reportedly intervened to halt further Israeli military advances in Gaza City, a move that contradicted military advice and Netanyahu’s own government’s previous approval of expanded operations.

As negotiations are set to commence in Egypt, Trump has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities to facilitate the safe extraction of hostages.

Consequently, the Israeli military has reportedly shifted its focus to defensive operations, a departure from Netanyahu’s previous insistence that negotiations would only occur under active military pressure.

Despite these complexities, Netanyahu has attempted to frame the situation as a significant achievement for Israel, even while acknowledging the ongoing military presence in Gaza.

Details of the proposed redeployment line indicate that while Israel would maintain control over substantial areas, there would also be a withdrawal from a crucial corridor dividing Gaza.

Adding to the pressure, Trump recently embarrassed Netanyahu by arranging a phone call with Qatar’s prime minister, where Netanyahu was reportedly compelled to apologize for a failed operation against Hamas leaders.

Furthermore, Netanyahu was reportedly forced to agree to a clause in the deal that hinted at a potential pathway to Palestinian statehood, a significant departure from his previous stance.

Experts suggest that, despite these challenges, Netanyahu possesses a history of resilience and political acumen.

He has managed to present the agreement as a victory to his supporters, understanding that opposing Trump could be detrimental to his political future.

However, the reality on the ground in Gaza remains grim.

Reports of widespread hunger and suffering continue to emerge, raising concerns about the long-term consequences of the conflict.

The focus on hostage negotiations, while crucial, should not overshadow the urgent need for humanitarian aid and a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As the situation unfolds, the question remains: Can Netanyahu navigate these complex pressures while maintaining his political standing in Israel? More importantly, can the agreement brokered under Trump’s influence pave the way for a just and sustainable peace for both Israelis and Palestinians?

The answer remains uncertain, but the need for a resolution that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict and alleviates the suffering of the Gazan people has never been more urgent.
