MANILA, Philippines — Veteran lawyer and politician Jesus Crispin Remulla has officially assumed his post as the seventh Ombudsman of the Philippines, replacing Samuel Martires.

Appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Remulla’s selection came on the heels of mounting pressure on the government to address allegations of corruption, particularly in flood control projects.

Remulla, 64, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Law (1987), where he was a member of the Upsilon Sigma Phi fraternity, he passed the bar exam and the Career Executive Service Board Examination the same year.

He then embarked on a career in private practice, becoming a senior partner at the Remulla and Associates Law Office.

Prior to his legal career, Remulla served as the 59th justice secretary from 2022 to September this year and represented Cavite in Congress from 2004 to 2013 and 2019 to 2022.

During his time in Congress, he held key leadership positions, including deputy speaker and senior deputy majority leader.

His appointment as Ombudsman, however, has not been without controversy.

Despite overcoming a complaint filed by the President’s elder sister, Sen. Imee Marcos, Remulla faces the challenge of demonstrating impartiality, particularly given his previous political affiliations and familial ties to the Remulla political dynasty of Cavite.

His brother, Jonvic, currently serves as secretary of the interior and local government, and other family members have held prominent political positions.

Upon assuming office, Remulla vowed to revisit restrictive policies implemented by his predecessor regarding access to Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth and lifestyle checks of all government officials and employees.

He also pledged to avoid “weaponizing the law” and ensure accountability across all levels of government.

Notably, he indicated his intention to review reports pertaining to Vice President Sarah Duterte’s confidential funds.

“I intend to serve with fairness and integrity,” Remulla stated in his inaugural address.

“The public deserves an Ombudsman who is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that those who abuse their power are held accountable.”

His seven-year term begins on Thursday, October 9, 2025, amid heightened public demand for government transparency and anti-corruption efforts.
