QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Fifty years after Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier etched their names in boxing history with the “Thrilla in Manila,” a star-studded commemoration at the Smart Araneta Coliseum rekindled the spirit of the legendary clash.

The event, attended by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Senator Manuel “Mar” Araneta Roxas II, celebrated the enduring legacy of the October 1, 1975, fight while showcasing a new generation of boxing talents.

Former senator and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao joined the dignitaries, highlighting the national significance of the anniversary.

The atmosphere buzzed with nostalgia as attendees reminisced about the original “Thrilla,” a fight that captivated the world.

The card featured compelling performances, including Olympian Eumir Marcial’s WBC title win and Carl Jammes Martin’s victory over Petchmanee Dipaen.

However, two names carried particular weight: Nico Ali Walsh, grandson of Muhammad Ali, and Eman Bacosa, son of Manny Pacquiao.

Bacosa Extends Unbeaten Streak, Credits Faith

Bacosa, 21, continued his impressive rise in the lightweight division with a unanimous decision victory over Nico Salado.

Judges scored the bout 58-55 twice and 60-53, pushing Bacosa’s professional record to 7-0, with four knockouts.

Despite the pressure of his father’s iconic career, Bacosa remains focused on forging his own path.

“I’m completely focused on my own journey and performance,” he said.

Following his victory, Bacosa expressed gratitude and attributed his success to his faith.

“I’m thankful to God and truly happy; I glorify His name and want to show everyone that nothing is impossible with our Lord,” he said.

Walsh Grabs Draw, Feels Filipino Love

Walsh, carrying the legacy of his grandfather, battled Kittisak Klinson to a majority draw.

While Walsh expressed disagreement with the judges’ decision, he acknowledged the overwhelming support from Filipino fans.

His presence added another layer of historical resonance to the event, connecting the past and future of boxing.

The night also saw Melvin Jerusalem successfully defending his WBC minimum weight title against South Africa’s Siyakholwa Kuse in the main event.

The “Thrilla in Manila” commemoration served as a powerful reminder of the fight’s enduring impact on the Philippines and the sport of boxing, inspiring a new generation of fighters while honoring the legends who paved the way.

The Philippine government issued a memorandum circular before the event, urging government agencies to support the Philippine Sports Commission in its anniversary preparations.
