PUCKAPUNYAL, Victoria – A 31-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing a fire truck from a rural fire service in New South Wales and leading police on a cross-border pursuit that ended on an army base in Victoria.

The incident began around 8:20 p.m. yesterday when authorities received reports of a stolen fire truck from the Bolton Rural Fire Service sheds near Jerilderie, NSW.

NSW Police initiated a pursuit that continued into Victoria, crossing the border at Tocumwal.

Victoria Police then took over the pursuit, following the truck along the Murray Valley Highway to the Goulburn Valley Highway.

Despite remaining within the speed limit, the driver allegedly refused to stop.

The pursuit continued past Shepparton, where stop sticks were successfully deployed.

However, the deflating tires did not deter the driver, who continued toward the Puckapunyal Army Base.

Authorities allege the fire truck breached the security access control point of the base.

After stopping the fire truck, the driver allegedly stole an unattended vehicle belonging to a security guard and continued further onto the base.

Stop sticks were again deployed, successfully halting the stolen vehicle and leading to the man’s arrest.

The Hamilton man has been charged with carjacking, two counts of stealing a motor vehicle, criminal damage, and transporting stolen goods. He is scheduled to appear in court today.
