GAZA CITY, Palestine – Despite a ceasefire, the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic, with Israeli restrictions on aid exacerbating the suffering of Palestinian children already traumatized by months of relentless bombardment, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

While reports of direct casualties have subsided, silent slaughter unfolds daily, fueled by starvation, disease, and the denial of basic necessities.

UNRWA spokesperson Adnan Abu Hasna paints a grim picture: “The situation is beyond dire. We are witnessing a systematic strangulation of Gaza, where the most vulnerable, especially children, are being starved of life.”

Israel’s continued blockade prevents the entry of critical international staff and severely restricts the flow of humanitarian supplies, leaving an estimated 6,000 food trucks stranded at border crossings.

This deliberate obstruction of aid, experts argue, constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law and raises serious questions about potential war crimes.

“More than 90 percent of Gaza’s population is now entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance,” Abu Hasna revealed.

“Many families are forced to survive on a single meal every 24 hours. The 170 aid trucks entering daily are a mere trickle compared to the overwhelming need.”

“The consequences are particularly devastating for children. Malnutrition rates are skyrocketing, leaving them vulnerable to disease and developmental delays. The psychological toll is immeasurable, with countless children suffering from trauma, anxiety, and despair,” Hasna said.

UNRWA is struggling to provide basic services to over 80,000 displaced people crammed into 100 overcrowded shelters.

Amid the chaos, the agency is desperately trying to maintain some semblance of education, offering remote learning to 300,000 students and in-person lessons to 50,000 others under unimaginable circumstances.

The reality on the ground is heartbreaking.

Approximately 48,000 children are attending makeshift classes in 330 temporary learning spaces across 59 shelters.

Deprived of proper facilities, many are forced to sit on the cold ground, hindering their learning and undermining their sense of safety and stability.

“These children have already endured unimaginable horrors,” Hasna lamented.

“Denying them education, proper nutrition, and a safe environment is condemning them to a future of despair.”

The current crisis is a direct result of Israel’s war on Gaza, which began on Oct. 7, 2023.

The indiscriminate bombardment and destruction have decimated schools and educational facilities, forcing UNRWA to convert emergency shelters into temporary classrooms.

The situation demands immediate and decisive action from the international community.

Pressure must be brought to bear on Israel to lift the blockade, allow the unfettered flow of humanitarian aid, and ensure the safety and well-being of Palestinian children.

Failure to do so will only deepen the humanitarian catastrophe and condemn an entire generation to a life of suffering and despair.

The world must not stand idly by as Gaza’s children are slowly starved to death.

This is not just a humanitarian crisis; it is a moral imperative, officials said.
