MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines – Former Bamban, Tarlac, mayor Alice Guo, whose controversial tenure was marred by allegations of ties to illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), has begun serving her life sentence for qualified human trafficking.

Guo, along with co-defendants Jaimielyn Santos Cruz and Rachelle Joan Malonzo Carreon, was transferred to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City Friday night.

The transfer, supervised by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), marks a significant turning point in a high-profile case that has gripped the nation.

Guo, now identified as Prison No. C225P-531, faces a life sentence behind bars and a staggering P2 million fine following her conviction on charges stemming from her alleged involvement in human trafficking activities linked to an illegal POGO operating within her municipality.

According to a report submitted by CIW CT/SUPT Marjorie Ann Sanidad to Bucor Officer in Charge, Assistant Secretary Al Perreras, the trio arrived at the CIW’s Reception and Diagnostic Clinic at 10:17 p.m., escorted by BJMP officers led by JCINSP Jean Olive Unciano.

The transfer was authorized by a Mittimus Order issued by Judge Annielyn Mendes-Cabels of Regional Trial Court Branch 167.

“This marks the beginning of a long and difficult journey for Ms. Guo,” stated a source familiar with the case.

“The gravity of her crimes has been recognized, and she will now face the consequences within the confines of the CIW.”

Upon arrival, Guo and her co-defendants will undergo a standard five-day quarantine period at the RDC, including thorough medical examinations.

Following quarantine, they will enter a 55-day orientation, diagnostics, and qualification process before being permanently assigned to the Maximum Security Camp, given the severity of their sentences.

Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. emphasized the importance of the initial assessment period for newly committed individuals.

“This 55-day period is crucial for determining their psychological and physical needs,” Catapang said.

“The information gathered will be used to create an individualized treatment plan, helping them adjust to the correctional environment while understanding their rights and the facility’s rules.”

Guo’s case has raised serious questions about local governance, the proliferation of illegal POGOs, and the potential for corruption within the Philippine political system.

Her conviction and subsequent imprisonment serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in criminal activities and abusing positions of power.

The nation will be watching closely as Guo navigates the complexities of life behind bars and confronts the repercussions of her actions.
