Sen. Lito Lapid: A Legacy Beyond Stunts, Rooted in Family, Service

MANILA, Philippines – For years, Senator Lito Lapid has hosted a humble thanksgiving lunch for the entertainment press every December.

It’s a far cry from the glitz and glamour often associated with politics and showbiz – no red carpet, no elaborate program, just simple food, genuine laughter, and sincere stories from a man who, despite his iconic action star status and prolific senatorial career, remains grounded and deeply connected to those who witnessed his ascent.

Now 70, Lapid’s focus has shifted.

He’s less interested in discussing his daring stunts, blockbuster films, or even his impressive legislative record.

Instead, he beams with pride when talking about his children and grandchildren, celebrating their achievements that surpass even his wildest dreams.

“I’m so happy they are all studying hard,” the senator said, glancing at his son, Mark.

“They’re smart and winning medals. I didn’t have that opportunity. They are what I’m most proud of now, not myself.”

During the lunch, Lapid revealed that Robin Padilla had approached him about producing and starring in “The Lito Lapid Story.”

However, Lapid insisted the role should go to his son or grandson, not out of ego, but for authenticity.

“If there’s a double, it’s fake,” Lapid stated, emphasizing his commitment to performing his own stunts in the past.

“If they make the Lito Lapid Story, it has to be real.”

This puts pressure on his son, Mark Lapid, COO of TIEZA. “It’s difficult,” Mark admitted.

“We haven’t experienced what he has. But we need to do it while Papa is still alive to ensure the story is accurate.”

Even his grandchildren, particularly the medal-winning Mati, have expressed interest in following his footsteps.

But for Lapid, a man who built his career on real danger and grit, authenticity remains paramount.

“I look at my grandchildren and wonder if they can handle my stunts,” he said. “I won’t let them use doubles. It has to be real.”

Lapid’s continued humility about his lack of formal education resonates deeply.

Despite his success, he remains sensitive to past insults and underestimations.

However, he has channeled that pain into purpose.

“I’m only human. It hurts because I didn’t get an education,” he confessed. “I tell my children, ‘Avenge me. Study hard. I don’t want you to be insulted like I was.'”

And they did. His children excelled, carrying not just medals, but the dignity he once felt he lacked.

Ironically, despite being underestimated academically, Lapid is one of the Senate’s most hardworking and prolific lawmakers, with a significant number of bills and resolutions filed throughout his career.

His advocacies reflect his roots: public safety, cultural protection, and grassroots needs.

In a surprising move, Lapid openly supports the Anti-Dynasty Bill, even with relatives in public service.

“I vote for that,” he stated. “To give young people a chance. Many talented individuals don’t win because they don’t have money.”

He emphasized that this stance applies to his own family.

“Even if I have children and grandchildren, we will follow the law. What’s important is a level playing field.”

Mark Lapid succinctly explains why “The Lito Lapid Story” needs to be told now: “We want to preserve his legacy accurately. It’s difficult to guess when he’s gone. While he’s still here, while the details are complete, while he can still tell the truth.”

Even amid discussions about biopics, political reforms, and legislative achievements, Lapid consistently returned to his family. “Whatever I’ve achieved, I’m happier with what my children and grandchildren have achieved,” he said. “They are higher than me. More talented. More intelligent. That’s the real success.”

The entertainment press applauded, not the action star or the senator, but the father and grandfather who never forgot where he came from.

As the lunch concluded, Lapid quietly moved from table to table, shaking hands, sharing jokes, and calling reporters by their nicknames.

No pretense, no barriers, just the same humble and grateful man they’ve known for years, always true to his roots.

Watching him beam with pride as he spoke about his family, it became clear that Lito Lapid’s greatest legacy isn’t etched in film or legislation, but in the success and well-being of his children and grandchildren.
