SYDNEY, Australia – A Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach became the scene of a horrific massacre on December 14, 2025, when a targeted shooting claimed the lives of 11 people and left 29 injured, including two police officers. 

The attack, which unfolded at Archer Park as hundreds gathered to mark the first night of Hanukkah, has been declared a terrorist act by New South Wales (NSW) Police.

The attack occurred during a Chabad-organized Hanukkah celebration, an eight-day Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The 2025 festival began on the evening of December 14.

Authorities have confirmed that two suspects were involved. One suspect is deceased, while the other is in critical condition at a local hospital. 

Investigators are working to determine if a third assailant participated in the attack. Further complicating the investigation, a makeshift explosive device was discovered in a vehicle linked to the deceased suspect, prompting the deployment of a specialized rescue and bomb disposal unit.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Australian Jewish community and ignited international condemnation. Questions are being raised regarding the government’s response to escalating antisemitism in the country.

The violence erupted during what was intended to be a joyous Chabad-organized Hanukkah celebration, featuring entertainment and activities for families. “This was a targeted attack aimed specifically at the Jewish community during their Hanukkah celebrations,” confirmed Premier Chris Minns.

The Jewish Council of Australia expressed profound horror and distress in the wake of the attack. “Many in our community are grappling with devastating news, while others are tending to injured loved ones, and some are anxiously awaiting news about their family members’ safety,” the council stated. “Experiencing such a brutal act of antisemitic violence during a time meant for light and hope is deeply unsettling. In times like these, we must support one another.”

Following the attack, the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies advised community members to remain indoors or seek shelter, canceling all events and communal activities.

International Outcry and Demands for Action

The Bondi Beach massacre has triggered outrage and expressions of sorrow from international leaders, particularly from Israeli officials who have criticized the Australian government’s perceived inaction in addressing rising antisemitism.

President Isaac Herzog interrupted a public meeting to condemn the attack, emphasizing the urgent need for the Australian government to combat the growing antisemitism within the country. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar echoed this sentiment, attributing the attack to the recent surge in antisemitic incidents in Australia. Minister of the Diaspora Amichai Chikli labeled the attack as the most severe act of terrorism against the Jewish community in Australia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, when questioned about the government’s response to rising antisemitism since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, asserted that the government is taking the situation seriously and has been proactive in its measures. He did not elaborate on specific measures.

A Heroic Act: Bystander Disarms Gunman at Bondi Beach In a remarkable display of bravery, a bystander was filmed wrestling a firearm away from a gunman at Bondi Beach.

The Bondi Beach gunman, named Naveed Akram, was identified in a video filmed by one of the witnesses. Police discovered an “improvised explosive device” in his vehicle.

Amidst the terror and chaos, accounts of bravery have surfaced. Premier Minns praised a bystander who intervened to disarm one of the attackers, acknowledging the significant impact of his heroism in saving lives.
