MOSCOW, Russia – In an unprecedented move that further isolates Russia from the international community, a Moscow city court has sentenced several judges, including its chief prosecutor from the International Criminal Court (ICC), to lengthy prison terms.

The sentences, ranging from 3.5 to 15 years, are a direct response to the ICC’s issuance of an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin in 2023, accusing him of war crimes related to the illegal deportation of children from Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine.

The action has been widely condemned as a blatant assault on international law and the independence of the ICC.

Russia, which is not a member of the court, has long rejected its jurisdiction and dismissed the arrest warrant as politically motivated.

The court found that “ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan unlawfully prosecuted Russian citizens in The Hague” and that the ICC “instructed the judges of the chamber to issue patently unlawful arrest warrants.”

Karim Khan, ICC prosecutor, received the harshest sentence of 15 years.
