BUUG, Zamboanga del Sur – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended a Chinese national in Buug, Zamboanga del Sur, on January 20 for allegedly engaging in unauthorized business activities. This operation underscores the government’s commitment to border security and immigration enforcement, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure strict adherence to Philippine laws by all foreign nationals residing in the country.

The individual, identified as Jianhong Liu, 52, from Jinjiang, China, was taken into custody at a commercial establishment in Barangay Sampaguita. Authorities acted upon confirmation of Liu’s presence and subsequent verification of his immigration status. Reports indicate that Liu was actively managing the business and interacting with customers at the time of his arrest.

According to the BI, Liu was unable to produce his passport during the verification process, claiming it was in Manila. He presented only a digital copy of his passport data page on his mobile device. Further investigation revealed that Liu was in violation of Philippine immigration laws, although the specifics were not immediately disclosed by the BI.

Following his apprehension, Liu was informed of the nature of his alleged violations and his rights in a language he understood. He was then transported to the local police station for documentation and further processing. The BI has not yet released details regarding the potential charges Liu may face or the specific immigration laws he is accused of violating.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing immigration regulations across the Philippines. “The President has been clear in his directive: while the Philippines remains open to legitimate foreign visitors and investors, our laws must be respected at all times,” Viado stated. “Foreign nationals who engage in activities beyond their visa allowances or fail to present valid travel documents will be dealt with accordingly.”

Commissioner Viado also highlighted the Bureau’s intensified field operations, particularly in regional areas, aimed at curbing illegal employment and other immigration-related offenses. “These enforcement actions are meant to protect Filipino workers, uphold the rule of law, and maintain the integrity of our immigration system,” he asserted.

The BI has reiterated its appeal to business owners and foreign nationals to ensure full compliance with all immigration requirements to avoid potential penalties, arrest, and deportation. The Bureau’s recent actions serve as a reminder of the government’s resolve to enforce immigration laws and maintain a secure and regulated environment for foreign nationals within the Philippines.
