Mayor Isko: Patient Receives Free, Successful Heart Procedure at Ospital ng Manila

MANILA, Philippines – In a landmark achievement for public healthcare, Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso announced on Thursday, July 9, the third successful angioplasty procedure performed entirely free of charge at the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center. This significant development underscores the city’s commitment to providing life-saving medical care to its most vulnerable citizens.

A 67-year-old Manila resident, whose procedure would typically cost up to P1.5 million in private institutions, walked out of the hospital without paying a single peso for a procedure valued at nearly P975,000. Mayor Domagoso, during his “Talk to the People” Facebook livestream, emphasized the profound impact of this initiative, stating, “Our patient paid zero. Literally zero. No payment. Thanks to the taxpayers of the city.”

Domagoso detailed the angioplasty as a minimally invasive method to clear blocked coronary arteries, eliminating the need for complex open-heart surgery. This advanced technique allows patients to recover swiftly and return to their families within days. “If your heart is blocked and bypass isn’t necessary, an angioplasty is the procedure,” he explained, reiterating the city’s unwavering commitment to offering this service free of charge, a procedure typically priced between P800,000 and P1.5 million in private hospitals.

Drawing from his own experiences with poverty, Mayor Domagoso reflected on the profound significance of this achievement for ordinary Manileños. “Many poor people die without being given a fair chance, at least a chance, because if the doctors, equipment, and medicines are there, they will be given a fair fight,” he powerfully stated, highlighting the city’s dedication to equitable access to healthcare.

This latest success follows the hospital’s initial two triumphant angioplasties in March 2026. These procedures were made possible by the inauguration of the city’s state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in September 2025, which initially commenced with complimentary angiogram services. To ensure the program’s sustainability, Mayor Domagoso has allocated a substantial P25 million in standby funds for equipment acquisition and maintenance.

Special commendation was extended to the dedicated medical team behind this life-saving intervention. Mayor Domagoso recognized Manila City Health Officer Dr. Grace Padilla, along with the interventional cardiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, and radtech staff for their exceptional expertise and commitment.
