Trump Declares “Economic D-Day” Against Iran, Threatens Global Repercussions

BRISBANE, Australia – In an escalation of his administration’s pressure campaign, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark ultimatum to the international community: cease all financial and commercial dealings with Iran or face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” from the United States. The pronouncement, delivered in all capital letters via Truth Social, signals a new, aggressive phase in the ongoing standoff following the expiration of a 60-day ceasefire.

Trump declared he is launching “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country!” and an “economic D-Day” on the Islamic Republic, citing Iran’s failure to reach a deal with the U.S. This sweeping threat appears to expand upon Operation Economic Fury, initiated in April to sanction foreign entities engaging in business with Tehran.

“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump asserted, without detailing specific punitive measures. He specifically targeted “oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies – it all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”

This aggressive stance follows the United Arab Emirates’ recent decision to sever all financial and economic ties with Iran. The UAE’s defense ministry reported detecting two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting maritime traffic, prompting their decisive action. Dubai’s financial system has long been a critical conduit for Iranian money transfers through exchange houses and shell companies.

In response, Iran’s armed forces have warned neighboring Gulf countries against supporting the U.S. military, deeming any assistance to American forces as collusion.

While not explicitly named in Trump’s statement, China, as the largest buyer of Iranian oil, remains a primary target. Washington has already sanctioned several privately owned Chinese “teapot refineries,” drawing strong condemnation from China’s Ministry of Commerce, which labeled the sanctions “in violation of international law.” Beijing has also issued an order instructing its entities not to recognize, enforce, or comply with these sanctions.

Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent foreshadowed the U.S. intent to impose “economic isolation on Iran like the world has never seen before.” Operation Economic Fury, a joint initiative by the U.S. Treasury Department and the Pentagon, aims to dismantle Iran’s revenue streams through sanctions and a naval blockade.

The renewed economic offensive also comes amid reports of Trump threatening to bomb Oman, a U.S. ally, if it obstructs his administration’s separate negotiations with Tehran to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing conflict has severely disrupted traffic through this crucial waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes, leading to a significant surge in global energy prices.

As the U.S. approaches midterm elections in November, the economic burden of the conflict on American consumers is a growing concern for the Trump administration. This latest declaration signals a profound and potentially destabilizing escalation in the international effort to cripple Iran’s economy.
