Investigative Report by Reporters Without Borders Reveals Systemic Violence Against Media Professionals, Threatening Independent Reporting and Concealing Human Rights Abuses.

Israeli Military Targets Palestinian Journalists in West Bank

MANILA, Philippines – Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released a damning investigative report exposing a stark escalation in arbitrary detention, violence, and obstruction by the Israeli army against Palestinian and international journalists operating in the occupied West Bank. This targeted campaign, documented over the past three months, aims to suppress independent media coverage and prevent vital information from reaching the global public.

“RSF unequivocally condemns the Israeli army’s attacks on journalists and urges Israel’s international allies to exert immediate pressure on authorities to halt these actions,” states Martin Roux, Head of RSF’s Crisis Desk. “Amid documented violence by extremist Jewish settlers against the Palestinian population, Israeli soldiers are now directly targeting journalists, effectively isolating the West Bank and creating a pervasive information vacuum.”

This report details a disturbing pattern of deliberate interference with media operations, ranging from the use of live fire and tear gas to arbitrary detentions and access bans. These actions, often perpetrated to obscure military and settler activities, constitute a grave violation of press freedom and international humanitarian law.

Key Incidents of Impunity and Obstruction (May-July 2026):

May 11 – Qalandiya Camp Raid

Israeli forces deployed tear gas and stun grenades directly at a group of journalists, including a crew from Al Araby, while they covered a raid on Qalandiya camp.

May 16 – Jenin Camp Lockdown

Journalists were explicitly barred from entering the Jenin camp during military and demolition operations, with Israeli soldiers sealing off the entire area to prevent reporting.

May 27 – Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound Access Denied

Freelance journalist Saif Al-Qawasmi (Al Jazeera Mubasher) was detained and interrogated by Israeli police and intelligence for hours before being arbitrarily banned from accessing the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound – a common punitive measure against Palestinian journalists.

June 7 – Balata Camp Under Fire

Photojournalist Majdi Mohammed Shteih (Associated Press) and freelance journalist Sidqi Ayoub Rayyan (Noon Post) reported being targeted with stun grenades and live fire by the Israeli army while attempting to cover a large-scale raid in Balata camp.

June 16 – Nablus and Deir Abu Mashaal: Deliberate Obstruction

Israeli forces forcibly removed approximately 10 journalists, including crews from Al Jazeera and Roya News, using stun grenades to prevent coverage of extremist Jewish settlers illegally entering Palestinian territory near Joseph’s Tomb.

Motassem Saqf Al-Hayt (Quds News Network) was injured by tear gas grenades fired by the Israeli army while reporting on settler outpost attempts in Deir Abu Mashaal.

July 22 – Haaretz Team Targeted South of Nablus

An Israeli army blockade prevented a Haaretz newspaper team from reporting near Nablus, ostensibly to prevent clashes with settlers. Days later, the same team was attacked by settlers in a neighboring village, with Israeli soldiers present refusing to intervene or protect the journalists.

Surge in Arbitrary Detentions and Foreign Journalist Expulsions

Since October 7, 2023, the number of Palestinian journalists arrested in the occupied West Bank has soared, with 15 of the 19 currently detained journalists apprehended during this period. On August 12, 2026, freelance journalist Mohammed Awad (AFP, Al Jazeera) was arrested at his home on unsubstantiated “terrorism” charges, with the army providing no evidence to RSF.

This crackdown extends to international correspondents. French journalist Alice Froussard (RFI) was deported upon arrival at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on June 10, following similar entry bans against journalists Queralt Castillo, Khadija Toufik, and Alessandro Stefanelli.

RSF’s Unwavering Commitment to Journalist Safety

In partnership with its Palestinian counterpart, Watan Academy, RSF continues to provide critical support to journalists. In August, the organization conducted specialized Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) for 20 Palestinian journalists, equipping them with essential skills for operating in this increasingly dangerous environment.

Reporters Without Borders reiterates its call for immediate international intervention to safeguard press freedom in the occupied West Bank. The systematic targeting of journalists not only undermines democratic principles but actively facilitates the concealment of human rights violations. The world must not remain silent.
