BRISBANE, Australia – In an escalation of already strained relations, Algeria has announced the immediate closure of its airspace to all United Arab Emirates-registered civilian and military aircraft. This decisive move follows Algeria’s abrupt severing of diplomatic ties with the UAE, citing a series of “provocative and hostile” actions by Abu Dhabi.

The Algerian Ministry of Defense declared the airspace ban effective from midnight, September 11. However, a crucial exemption has been granted for Emirati commercial civilian flights operating to and from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers, allowing them to continue until their current contract expires at the end of 2026.

This profound diplomatic rift signals a significant shift in regional alignments and comes after years of escalating tensions between the two North African and Gulf nations.

A Severed Relationship: “Exhausted All Means”

Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the UAE ambassador and delivered the directive to sever diplomatic relations, allowing a 48-hour period for compliance. The ministry asserted that the UAE’s actions had reached an “unacceptable and intolerable” point, and Algeria had “exhausted all means of preserving bilateral relations.” While specific reasons for the break were not publicly detailed, Algerian media have previously accused the UAE of attempts to sow regional discord.

In response, the UAE Foreign Ministry expressed hope that Algeria’s decision would be temporary, reiterating Abu Dhabi’s commitment to maintaining ties between the two nations’ peoples and shared interests. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, commented on the importance of “rationality, communication, and clarity of interests” in diplomacy, implying a need for transparent dialogue over “riddles and signals.”

Divergent Paths: A Deepening Divide

The diplomatic breakdown is rooted in deep-seated disagreements on several critical regional issues:

Israel Normalization

Algeria staunchly opposes normalization with Israel, a position that directly conflicts with the UAE’s establishment of diplomatic ties under the 2020 U.S.-brokered Abraham Accords.

Western Sahara Dispute

The two nations hold opposing stances on the decades-old Western Sahara conflict. The UAE supports Morocco’s claim to sovereignty and maintains a consulate in the territory, while Algeria backs the Polisario Front’s pursuit of an independent Western Sahara.

Sahel Region Influence

 Their interests have increasingly intersected and clashed in the Sahel, where the UAE has expanded its ties with various governments, while Algeria’s relationships with some of its southern neighbors have been strained by a series of recent military coups.

Last year, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune implicitly criticized the UAE, referring to one unnamed Gulf state as interfering in Algeria’s internal affairs and attempting to destabilize it, while maintaining “brotherly” ties with other Gulf nations. This public condemnation foreshadowed the current rupture.

Further signaling the deterioration of relations, Algeria initiated the cancellation of a 2013 air services agreement with the UAE earlier this year. The closure of airspace marks the most concrete and impactful consequence of this unraveling relationship, forcing a reevaluation of regional air travel and diplomatic strategies.
